Event Description

ETUSC is a 7 night summer camp for approximately 80 unschoolers ages 13-18. There will be many activities, camper run workshops, jam sessions, bonfires, swimming, kayaking, zipline and climbing tower, mentoring, dancing, and much more.

At camp we want to stay true to the unschooling philosophy that learning takes place everywhere, all the time...especially when you're having fun! But above all, we want to encourage and be an example of a lifestyle built on the idea that our children are to be respected and trusted.

ETUSC is a non-denominational, non-religious camp. We welcome campers and staff of all races, ethnic backgrounds, genders, religious beliefs, sexual orientations, economic backgrounds, political affiliations, and physical capabilities.

It is our hope that our campers will learn more about themselves, make lifelong friendships, and discover new interests...all while having an amazing time in a beautiful setting.

Well it's time for camp.  And with all the craziness this week I completely forgot to update this event listing. So I'm posting this here even though everyone who is coming already knows...it bugs me that it's not updated.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Buffalo Mountain Camp (where ETUSC is held each year) was devastated in the recent storm. I received a call from them Monday afternoon and there are several feet of mud in Alison Lodge, there is no power or water. They are not sure when they will be able to get a crew up there because the road leading to camp is inaccessible due to a house sitting in the middle of the road. The road leading up to camp is demolished.  Yes, it is that bad.  The facility has been claimed a state disaster area and a 100% loss.  I am heartbroken and trying not to cry again as I edit this newsletter for emailing.  BUT…we found a new location!!
Camp ACC-Appalachian Christian Camp is our new facility for this year. there will be a few adjustments to make to our usual routine but we are very excited to have found an awesome place on such short notice!!
The dates and times are all the same: 12th-19th (11th-19th for staff, BUT NOT PARENT VOLUNTEERS unless you are also bringing staff), that’s the main thing we were scrambling for was to not have to change dates. The only difference is location, so make sure you get the new address: Appalachian Christian Camp * 512 Cross Circle * Unicoi, TN 37692. But follow the directions on the website as your gps might try to take you elsewhere. http://www.campacc.com/viewpage.php?page_id=25

this is a description of the dorm style cabins we will use for camp this year, WE WILL ONLY HAVE THE TWO DORMS, not any of the other lodges you see on their website:
Each Dormitory Sleeps 64. A/C throughout
Two identical dormitories that can house up to 64 people each.

Each dorm is designed so a half dorm can be used by itself. Each half includes:

Bedrooms - 4 bedrooms each with 8 twin bunk beds giving 32 beds/half dorm. Guests will need to provide all bedding and towels.

Bathrooms - 2 bathrooms with 4 showers each. Each shower has its own private dressing area.

We will be using one dorm for campers and the other for staff and parents. They are near each other so we won’t have to have jr. staff bunk with the campers this year.

For parents and some staff who have gotten used to the wonderful Retreat Center at BMC this will be a change for sure as there are no private rooms, showers or a kitchen.

There are a few parents that are not volunteers that paid for private rooms at the Retreat Center. If you would like a refund so you can find a room elsewhere, we are prepared to do that. If you choose to still stay at camp you will not need to bring any food (you can bring some snacks and keep them in your room as there are shelves in each room) as there is not a kitchen in the dorms. You will be able to join us for all meals during the week if you choose to do so. There are lots of little restaurants around if you want to get out and check out the area.
