Qacei wrote an interesting essay on her blog yesterday about her experience of getting lost in a book. She's currently enamored with the Twilight series. For anyone who wonders if an unchooled child will ever learn to read or write "properly," I give you Exhibit A. In my opinion it's got all the elements of the best kind of written expression and it's based on her love of reading.*

*Disclaimer: I am totally biased.

That's totally fantastic! Your daughter is very eloquent & you should be extremely proud of her.
Hey that's a wonderfully expressed blog that Qacei wrote.
I read her blog this afternoon and thought it was great. Liz has been doing some serious reading this week which is unusal for her. She discovered anime graphic novels and then started Twilight the other day. She was in the bookstore last weekend during the release party but had no idea what was going on. A group of kids all dressed up asked them if they were part of Team Edward. They said um no we're just here. I can't wait for her to finish the book so I can read it.
She described exactly how I get lost in a book. :-)
That was fun to read! She's a great writer, and I agree with her that reading a book and watching a movie are just not the same, though I do enjoy both. And what a gift to have days of freedom to get lost in books! Another great reason to unschool.
I really enjoyed reading that. She really captures what it is like to get "lost" in a book.

I have a nine and a half year old daughter who is not reading or writing much yet.She listens constantly to audio books and we read to her a lot.She can tell wonderful stories and her imagination is unlimited. She very often acts out a character from the book we are reading whether it is a slave girl from Rome or a plague victim from the 1600.Sometimes the characters in the book become imaginary friends and we live with them. She really feels the story.
It was many months after leaving school before she even picked up a pen to write and now she is actually choosing to spend time writing in her journal and not worrying about making spelling mistakes just enjoying getting something down on paper. We are quite new to unschooling and it is stories like Qacei's that have helped me through all the doubting times. Thanks for sharing.xx
Beinng a lifelong bookworm myself, I so enjoyed reading this.... especially the way she talked about finding herself going off unconsciously from the storyline with all the different possibilities that 'could be'. That's the writer in her!
I will SO have to share that with Aiden! She talks about books and movies in just that way. I read the first Twilight book and must say I wasn't all that impressed, but after reading Qacei's blog I'm going to give the series another look. Connor and Aiden DID say it got better as it went along;-)
