Unschooling In The C i t y

I am totally new and totally into unschooling. My question is this: seems like unschooling goes hand in hand with rural and natural living. Anyone out there with suggestions and stories about unschooling in big cities like Los Angeles? It would be great to hear from you and to know a bit about what your life is like.

Well I've heard LA is horrific to drive in ... is everything a long long drive? My nephew just moved to CA but to a ruralish town about 100 miles north of LA (Ridgecrest).

I'm really too rural for my own comfort here in SC honestly. Really. Honestly? I would prefer at least a town with better access to cultural events and what not, and maybe occasion use of public transit (that runs fairly frequently not just once an hour or less). The expense of living in a city is a drawback and maybe the crowds would get to me sometimes. As for unschooling, cities are great! I think so. So many things are free or very low cost to the public. I'd guess transportation to be the big expense in LA.

It's true that there is a lot to do as far as public events go... but my question is more about day to day living. We will most certainly find our way but it seems like a creek, the woods, the trees give kids room to roam and truly be free.My kids are still very young so I am sure as they get older it will feel safer to let them out on their own in our neighborhood located in the big city. For now it is a challenge...I am creating a creative home, letting go of my need for neatness all the time and we just bought a piano! I just hear a lot about how children learn so much from being free in nature...I guess they can also learn in a similar yet very different way in this urban place we call home.
