Books for young kids that "advertise" homeschooling

A friend of mine is complaining that her 4 year old says she wants to go to school next year because of all the school propaganda in the kids' magazine she reads. I mentioned to her that there are at least two "homeschool propaganda" books (by that I just mean: books where the main characters are homeschooled):

Freya and Heath are home educated

and

Adventures of the Homeschoolers: The Genie in the Teapot

or

does anybody know of any other such books?

ooh that sounds like a great book, I will have to check it out, Nim's Island was a great example of unschooling, how about August Rush, anyone see that - I thought that was pretty much unschooling!!

oh yeah, not a book recommendation, but how about the movie RV, that promoted homeschooling and was fun!!

I am sure there are lots of books that would capture the unschooling life, that may not specifically say homeschool, or would be homeschool propaganda per se, within the story, but that show learning in life as a child is inevitable and natural apart from school. Would that help your friend to look at books that way??

There's a sequel to Stargirl, "Love, Stargirl", but I didn't like it as well as I liked the first one.

Perhaps books set in other times and places where schooling isn't/wasn't the norm would be helpful.

There are books about homeschooled girls (twins, maybe?) by Stacy Towle Morgan. (They are Christian-themed, I believe.)

The book The Happy Hedgehog by Marcus Pfister is a great picture book for unschoolers. It doesn't come out and say it's about unschooling, but it illustrates the idea beautifully. It does have a small part where the hedgehog observes school, but chooses not to go.
We love this book!

I compiled a Listmania list at Amazon of books/movies that have homeschooled characters. Might not all be the kind of book you're looking for, but here is the link: http://tinyurl.com/4spozu . I'd love to add more!

Ok, I added the books/movies that were listed above. :) Nim's Island did come from a book, and there are at least two other books in the series, that I found.

We really like this book. We checked out from the library a few years ago and promptly purchased it.

How about My Side of the Mountain? About a kid who learns to live off the land by himself.

Treasure Island is a good read, and at least there's no school in it.

There's no school in any of the Narnia books, and they all involve children being self-reliant.

There's also no school propaganda (or violence) in any of the Ferret Chronicles series, by Richard Bach.

The Wizard of Oz series may also serve.

Mysterious Island, by Jules Verne, involves men who survive on an island, learning as they go.

Skellig. Hands-down the best unschooling quotes from Mina in that book....but not exactly written with a four-year old in mind.

Great little story, my almost 7yo son wishes it was a longer story.

I wrote such a story :) In fact the characters are unschooled, though the wording doesn't exactly say so. Actions speak louder, however!

If you write a message to me that you found me on familyrun I will sign it for free to your child :)
