Luckily, the article isn't as negative as the title would have one think. I still kind of wish it hadn't been written, though.

thanks for sharing this.  i got sort of a mixed message from it.  i couldn't tell if she really got it or not.  there was definitely the sarcasm thing that i see a lot in these sort of essays.  but then also what seemed to be getting it but flip flopping.  i don't like the lumping everyone into a type thing.  but there were good parts.  i'm too tired to think about it too much but i didn't totally hate it. i didn't love it either.

The negative parts of the article are a good look at why conferences can be not such a good place for people on the fence about unschooling - it's easy to find examples which don't make unschooling look so great. The negative examples were all younger kids, toddlers for the most part, and despite the writer's complaints, I've heard exactly the same stories from early education teachers and day care providers - so either the writer's kid was a pretty mellow toddler, or she's forgotten what it's like to live with a 4yo.

Did you read that this was adapted from the book the author read?

and I did not read anything good in it at all.

Wonder what Conference was that.....

I've only been to three conferences, but I've never seen anything like what she describes happening.  I have heard an account or two about parents behaving badly, but not anything with naked kids hitting each other with wooden toys.

I wondered which conference she was at, as well.  I also wondered if she embellished some.
