Do you want to learn or do your kids want to learn?
In order of closeness to how people naturally learn, and therefore effectiveness:
Move to the country where it's spoken and learn as children do by immersion :-)
Find someone who speaks the language to talk to you.
Watch cartoons and movies in that language.
Turn on the audio track of favorite movies dubbed in that language.
"Read" your favorite practically-memorized books in that language.
"Read" children's books in that language.
Tintin and Asterix comics have both been translated into many languages.
Pimsleur audio language program. Very clear pronunciation, broken down by syllables.
Rosetta Stone computer language program. Tries to make the learning more natural by coming at words from multiple direction as you do in real life.
A couple of free ones:
Live Mocha - I believe this one has live people available to talk to.

That's how my son learned Spanish.
Thanks for the tips. My son wants to learn German and didn't like German Rosetta Stone. We have found a few online Grman tv shows that he likes.
