Radical Unschoolers Network

the network for radical unschooling families

Hello my name is Charissa Vaunderbroad, My son is Phoenix,10. We have been unschooling for most of his life. I am getting back into college soon and am curious how that is going to change our days, we have had a family business in Spokane WA since I was two and now it is closing and I am going into school for nursing.
At first I really struggled with the isolation of being an unschooling parent, my hubby is supportive, (which is really cool) but my family and friends acted like we were going to mars without a spaceship, Like it was impossible to give a child freedom without ruining them.
Most of the homeschoolers I've met are doing it because of religious views or academic competitiveness I found them snobby and mean to their kin so we haven't found any h-s groups in our area that we want to join, not that we haven't met with them.
I feel the need for validation less and am starting to meet more people that have kids that my son enjoys being around. So I consider us very lucky! ~Charissa

It is odd the way people think you're leaving the planet, when you don't necessarily even need to leave your house or the chair you're sitting in, to change your point of view and priorities.

I've used that example sometimes when a family was freaking out and scared to take their kids out of schoool. I've said "It's not like you're going to Mars. You'll still be home."

Does your son do any online gaming? He might find some unschoolers to communicate with regularly and to interact with that way.

He hasn't been too into any online games yet, he plays a lot of games though, that would be great, can you recommend any he may like? We have starcraft and he loves that But we haven't went online with it, I don't know if you can.
