Hi group! So happy to have found this forum, and so happy to have found a community of like minded folks. Our story? Well, in a nutshell, in 2008 my 10 year old son and decided to sell everything, and hit the road for an adventure. My son had been in a traditional charter school for the 2 previous year and before that, he had been in montesarri. I got to undersand his learning style and began to understand this highly motivated and extremely bright kid did not excel in the confines of conformity. (a chip off the old block? Of course!!)
Circumstances let us into the decision to travel the world. If that wasn't risky enough, what about Miro's education? - was the response I used to get while we planned for departure. My answer: What's 5th grade got on traveling around the globe, experiencing different cultures, learning new languages, participating and volunteering? I hadn't heard of unschooling at that point, nor had I sought out a discipline or label to refer to, I simply knew this was the best education and experience ever.
Miro is guided by his interests. Right now, it's role playing video games.. He's so brilliant, he designs his own, including point systems, strategy, charactors. He researches the historical facts, character traits in mythology, etc. and writes amazing stories and draws incredible maps.. He has the freedom and support to do this.
My son was raised as a peace and human rights activist as well, understands compassion and by traveling, he gets to experience it. We have been traveling for a year and a half now, and plan on staying on the road for the next 7 years. I plan on "Radically Unschooling" the entire time!
If you are interested in our blog (and we even started podcasting) , we'd love to hear from you! Right now we are in Panama, but will be heading into South America early next year.
Much love and light community!
