Radical Unschoolers Network

the network for radical unschooling families

We have bought an RV and will be hitting the road 9/3/10.  I would like to find a state (or more so I can choose) that doesn't require me to 'check in' or report except at the beginning of the school year.  I also don't want them to have to test.  Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance!!! :)

Maine.

Letter of intent for the first year to the state and local superintendent. The second year you send the letter of intent in with a portfolio review from previous year (handled by cert. teacher, often someone who has just kept their cert and doesn't necessarily teach...many in our area that assess w/an eye to unschooling) The review is just to show progress throughout the year. Doesn't have to be elaborate at all. In fact, you can often send in your portfolio to be reviewed, thereby not needing to be there in person.

Rinse, Lather and Repeat each year.

Our family plans on living outside the State for most of the year, starting next year (pssst, anyone wanna buy a house???) and I'm thrilled at how easy it will be to be on the road!
Hi rachel,
We live in a n rv right now and we now claim residency in florida. The homeschool rules are fairly easy but we are using an ubrella school so we do even less. Texas is pretty much the best, all you do is say your homeschooling. One thing to think about is doing the rv paper work and stuff. Depending on the state you could have to return there every year for emissions tests and stickers ans all that. In florida we can do it all through the mail :)

We live in Arizona and you must file an affidavit of intent to homeschool with county school superintendent. No tests or checking in required. If you quit homeschooling then you also need to notify the superintendent.
NJ requires nothing--no "check in" or registration, no testing, no reporting.
Hi there Rachel, Enjoy your travels! we are in New Mexico, here they have very few rules as far as H/S U/S ing, actually as far as a lot of things goes it seems lol, infact I was was quite interested in your post, because I had no idea that as HS/US ers we are required to 'check in' in other states,
here we just email the state education board and tell them we are homeschooling, no testing is required whatsoever, in fact even school children here do not have to be tested if the parent does not want this, we are just all led to believe that our children are required to be tested hmmm what else are we not told.
Not sure about other states though, good luck and have fun.

Hilary
Texas has pretty lax homeschooling rules. We travel by RV a great part of the year and are thinking about using Texas as our home base. The best to you and your family on your RV adventure!
