the network for radical unschooling families
Hello folks. I am required by West Virginia state law to submit yearly proof that my child is making "academic progress in accordance with his abilities" to our county board of education. The options I am given include "standardized testing" *shudder* or a "review" of a portfolio of my child's experiences/work for the past year. (My "portfolio" has always taken the form of a conversational style written monthly narrative of activities, field trips, experiences, books read, etc.)
As you can imagine, I've chosen the review for the past few years. I've done so via a local lady who offers these services, however she's a "homeschooler" not an unschooler and definitely not a radical unschooler. While she says she "gets it" her requirements for the contents of the portfolio as the years have passed have shown more and more that she in fact, does not "get it". So, I'm wondering if anyone out there in RUN knows of a truly "unschool friendly" certified teacher (they do NOT have to be certified in West Virginia, only a "state certified educator") who would be willing to look over what amounts to a "diary" of activities throughout the year and sign off that my son has made "academic progress" whatever the heck that means... I'm of course more than willing to pay for the service and would willingly walk whomever through the twists and turns of doing so. From my observations it's fairly simple. Help, please?
Apologies if this is the wrong forum for this discussion. I read through each section and this is the one that made the most sense to me. If it should be in another, please let me know and I'll delete it here and move it there.

Permalink Reply by Jean Godar on July 8, 2012 at 8:09pm I just saw your post. Were you ever able to find someone ? If you still need someone, I have lots of friends who are teachers and we could talk directly about finding you the right person to help.

Permalink Reply by Amie Chappel on April 24, 2013 at 7:13pm I'm curious who you were able to find. We are new to homeschooling as a whole this year, so I don't have a lot of contacts yet. I have been keeping a blog, describing what we are doing, as a portfolio, but I'm anxious about finding an evaluator who will understand unschooling, much less understand how our daily lives are teaching the kids. Any info would be awesome.
