Radical Unschoolers Network

the network for radical unschooling families

I love the word noob.

I'm a mama of a four year old boy, living in KS with my partner. I've always planned to do some version of unschooling, but I wasn't sure how radical. I was facinated with Summerhill by AS Neil when I was younger though and always imagined I would live in an intentional community surrounded by homeschoolers/unschoolers by the time I had kids. It didn't happen like that though. lol

Life situations forced me to put him into daycare at age two and then preschool last year so I could work outside of the home. He's already displaying a hatred of learning just from his experiences in preschool. It's a fight to get him to go each day. I'm pretty sure he would not work out in public school, even if I was intent on him going there. He's a little too stubborn. I've considered Waldorf school (there's one in Lawrence, KS somewhat close to me), but it's just too expensive.

I'm working to get enough work-at-home income now though so I can unschool him instead of enrolling him in public Kindergarten next year. I'm also thinking of relocating somewhere else if I ever get the means to. As far as I know, there are no unschoolers around here and the homeschooling groups are conservative Christians. I'm non-religious so I don't see social activities with those groups working out too well, but we'll see. :) I still wouldn't mind finding a co-housing community somewhere, but those are out of my price range so far.

I'm so glad I found this community though!! I really need some like-minded people to inspire me to overcome some stuff that's gonna be in my way in the next few years as I embark on this venture. :)

If he's "too stubborn" for regular school, he might not even get accepted into a Waldorf school - some of the screen pretty heavily for kids who are easy-going. Good luck on the work front!

Hi there! I'm a noob too.

I hope you can find some way to stay home with your son! I started a business from home so that I ould but I realise this isn't an option for everyone.

Good luck xx
