Radical Unschoolers Network

the network for radical unschooling families

This unschooling family has finally achieved our dreams and gotten an RV. We hit the road full-time in just a few hours. Mama has to get some schoolwork done (online university) and we have to run a couple of errands, then we pack up and roll-out!

Those who have been on the forum for a few years may remember that we've taken a couple of pretty long roadtrips and met some of you wonderful people as we do so. We would love to meet more people as we drive around the nation. Our RV travel is somewhat planned and somewhat on a time table. We're making a counter-clockwise loop from Texas around the outer ring of the nation with the plan to be in OR by September for a wedding.

We would love all sorts of suggestions of places/things to see on I-10 from Texas to FL. We will be all throughout FL, then back up through SC, NC, VA, DC, PA, NJ, NY and New England. We're planning to do this over the course of the next few months.

Also, if we planned to see you on a previous trip and ran out of time, we have nothing but this time! Let us know, we'd still love to visit.

Andrea That is AWESOME!! We are picking up our RV in about a week and will also be full time!!
Cool, where are you leaving from?
Jealous....I so wanted to full-time, but we tried 5 months with the kids a few years back and DS went sort of out of his mind. He just does not do travel. Too weird for 2 parents who love to be in different places all the time. Oh well, he's 16. Pretty soon we can go wherever we want to whenever we want to. The 5 months we had though were wonderful!! Enjoy your new lifestyle.
Our eldest couldn't handle it either. He turned 18 last August and we started plotting for the RV right away. He's talked about joining us a few times and he may for a few weeks here and there, but he doesn't like long road trips. When we took them in a van, he would get fed up around the 4th week.

We are at Lake Tahoe right now. But for the next 9-12 months we are hanging out on the West Coast, using Reno, NV as kind of a hub for us, because we have a business here and we need it to be going strong before we head out East. We are so excited. Our first adventure is actually going to pick up our RV, my hubby found a great deal on one that is perfect for us, in Phoenix. So we get to spend some time picking it up next week to bring it back and load up and then no more sticks and bricks!!

Our dd16 is really into horses, also. We'll be visiting family with farms and maybe WWOOFing for horse time. She loves the road and meeting new people more, though.

Oh, our year on the road was one of our best as a family! I can't imagine covering so many states in just a couple of months, wow!

If you make it to northern NM we can give you a spot to park, hike, fish and swim for a bit.
Yeah, we've been to all on this side of the Mississippi except Florida and Maine, which is why we're spending more time in FL and our favorite places. We will be back to NM sometime around winter, when do y'all get snow, or do you? We would love to stop for a visit!

Oh yes, we get snow! We're in the mountains around 8200 ft. Our first snow comes around September. We've got several feet right now thanks to the latest two day storm. We're fairly inaccessible in the winter unfortunately. We have to park our truck at the road and bring the kids and groceries down to the cabin on the sled. :-p

They don't get nearly as much snow in Taos though, which is about 15 minutes down the road (a 1000 ft drop in elevation).

We loooooved FL, btw. I never had much interest in going there, but we had to while we were trying to outrun a nation wide freeze last winter. I was just amazed at how beautiful it was... even in February. Destin beach was my favorite. I spent my 29th birthday there well into the frigid evening jumping waves with the kids. So beautiful...
