Radical Unschoolers Network

the network for radical unschooling families

My Husband is considering a job in Brooks. We're currently East coaster living in VA....so this would be quite a move for us. Would love some feedback to the near by area which seems to include Esprando, Woodland, Davis and West Sacromento. What's the best place to start to look for a place to live? Would love to be close to other unschoolers!

Thanks

I don't have any information about CA, I don't live there. I just wanted to respond with a question. Did you happen to check out the homeschool laws in CA? I don't know how they stand to date, but I know recently they were trying to make all homeschooling go through a certified teacher. I don't know if that ever went through or not, but it might be worth investigating before you move. I don't mean to over step or suggest something you may have already done, I'm just concerned for another unschooler!

Good luck!

I'm not sure what the law requires, I'm in the process of trying to join some CA yahoo groups to get the specs...but I know alot of unschoolers hail from CA...so it can be done...and if worse case senario strick regulations as you mentioned..I would just not register...fly under the radar as they say =)

This link will give you the breakdown of different ways to comply with California education law. There is also a statewide yahoo list, as well as many local groups throughout the state.

Thanks Frank and Cindy for the very helpful links! Looks like we'll be flying out midweek to check out the area and see if the job is a go for us. I've gotten some great feed back from the unschooling community in CA...and just knowing, that part of our lives (really the biggest..our children learning freely ) would be a smooth transition...allows me to breathe and focus energy on bigger daunts...such as selling our house =0 !! in a short time.... in a bad market...eeek!

we're moving to CA and also need info on how to get a credited diploma for my daughter who won't pass the GED with her unschooling education...and her last 2 years will be in public school but STILl won't get a diploma from them and they don't recognize 9 & 10th grade...so if you find something out there in CA, let me know please! schools out there do not recognize homeschooling.

In California, among other options, is the ability to establish your own private school. You can then graduate her and issue a valid high school diploma. Depending on her goals, we have a wonderful community college system; and universities, both public and private, are not only noticing, but actively recruiting homeschooled students.

I have a friend who lives in Sacramento (I'm not sure what part as we're not local), and she meets with unschooling families on a regular basis; there are usually over fifty unschoolers at their park days.

Good luck with your move.
