For me it is essential to know her work to be able to love our children.

Are there many RUN who read hers books?

I read "For Your Own Good" years ago, and it was very helpful to me in stepping entirely away from traditional parenting.

I read For Your Own Good as well. The stories are so horrendous that I could not even imagine. It was a real eye opener to me to read about those kinds of things. How far some parents will go...willingly and even unmindfuly( if thats a word)
I could pick that up and read it again but the case was made in my mind even before reading the book that any kind of violence towards children was uncalled for...yelling, slapping, hair pulling, kicking. I have heard parents defend their actions so many times and say well it happened to me and I'm alright.
Enough. I saw our neighbor yelling at his almost two year old in the backyard one day and when this small child did not "come when called" this large man walked over and carried the screaming boy into the house dangling by the arm. I was shocked...my husband was outside...if looks could kill...we were horrified and what can we do? That is what always bothers me...what to do when witnessing things like that. I want to attack those people right back, I want to take that child home and keep them, I want to shout from the rooftops how mean and nasty this person really is when they act so nice and polite to other adults, I want to call them hypocrites...you get my point. But doing any of those things will add to the violence...add to the disharmony...
It is sad and frustrating..
I don't think that these people even deserve the title "traditional"...just mean. Mean and some of them don't even know it. Or care.
Forgive the rant...

i read a book years and years ago by alice miller but i can't remember the name. she wrote about crying and how important it is and that there is actually a chemical difference between "good" tears and "bad" tears. does anyone know the name of this book...or if it's even the same alice miller??

Dr Neufeld who wrote "Hold On to Your Kids", who is very much about the attachment theory, talks about these tears of "futility", and how there is actually a chemical released with these tears that can allow a calming sensation to be reached...kind of like purging yourself of these toxins that have built up and get released through the tear ducts.
If Skye Wylie is around (are you, Skye?) she can give more info on this one, as she works often with Dr. Neufeld and would know the details better than I do.

I've known Alice since 1989. We have an "Alice Miller Library" with many of her articles at http://www.naturalchild.org/alice_miller/ .

I have read and been changed by her books. Her thoughts on what shapes those of us who go into counseling as a profession have had a tremendous impact on me- and her understanding of children and parents is also so healing to read once we become parents. I have a few colleagues who also feel profoundly affected by her work.

Hello, Jan.
I read many articles in Natural Child Project. Alice Miller and You also.
Your work is excellent. Can I put a link in my web site www.ojosdecielo.org to www.naturalchild.org?
