Radical Unschoolers Network

the network for radical unschooling families

Hi there,

We're considering Florida as a possible place to move and would like to get an idea of where RU families are. Any places that have a thriving community? Any places you wish you were closer to?

thanks,

Arp

I'm still curious where some good US communities in FL are.  We're planning a trip to FL sometime next year and would love to meet some peeps while there :)
Apologies Bibi - I seem to have missed a lot of discussion on my own thread!  We did not meet Sharon & Dick in person but have been in touch with them virtually for some time.  Costa Rica was a great experience, but I don't see us returning there again as there are many other places we'd like to experience!

Hola Arp,

where in Costa Rica are you?? Do you know Sharron and Dick, unschoolers near San Jose? We LOVE Costa Rica.

Anyway, we live in DeLand, north of Orlando, inland of Daytona Beach.

Pura Vida,

Bibi

We are relocating to Sarasota, Fl...3 day countdown. YAY!

Cool - where from?
Arp...from NYC. I have heard good things about the hs'ing community in Florida being great! Good luck with whatever you decide! :)
We live in Scottsmoor which is in north Brevard County. Looking for unschoolers around here too!!!
We live in Pinellas County (Clearwater Area).  There are a decent number of unschool families here.
Cool - how many do you think there are?

Oh, I guess 20-30 families?   Maybe more?   A group of people meet each week but I'm guessing 5-8 families show up any week.  It could be more but I've been in NC for a few months, so I'm not sure.

That's pretty good!  When we lived in NY, it was a handful spread out with the closest peeps being 30-40min away.

Yes, it still takes time to get from one end of the county to the other but it's really not that bad. I'd say the most is 30-45 minutes to cross.

That's not too bad.  In NY it was a bare mininum of 30-40 min.  The monthly support group was fairly central to us all - the closest could get to it in 20min, some peeps would drive 1h+ to make it.  It sounds much better in Tampa & Sarasota, and is pretty cool here in Austin as well.
