I too would love a Florida unschooling conference!
Any one in the Palm Harbor area?

I totally agree. I actually went ahead and canceled my FPEA registration today. After looking at the schedule and what was offered, I just couldn't do it. Has anyone been to any of the unschooling conferences?

Hi Kati! Thanks for your response :). Where are you from? Do you visit Orlando often?
I am a little concerned about what I may find at FPEA. I wonder if I should even bother as I think I will be doused with curriculum frenzy.
I may go the first day and check to see if there is anything/anybody speaking of interest. Thanks for your input.
I think that is terrific that you are working on having a conference down here, we certainly need one!!!

Welcome Misa!

I'm in Orlando right now for vacation (Kissimmee to be exact). I;ve never been to a FPEA conference, but I've heard from many people that it is not unschooling friendly at all.

I'm working on an unschooling conference in Florida for next year though. ;)

Hi FL Unschoolers! So glad to have found some :). We are in west Orlando and I unschool my 7 yr ds and 5 yr. old dd. I was wondering, anyone know of any unschooling conferences that happen in FL, or even the south for that matter? Anyone going to the FPEA conference next weekend? We registered, but I am wondering just how many unschoolers actually go to this. I would love to meet you if you are :)!! Thanks, Misa

When I first started to homeschool my kids I used various methods. I picked up workbooks at Staples, Walmart, and at used book stores. I also bought books at flea markets to build my home library. We also used the public library weekly. I found that we could spend under 100 dollars a child just using the library and used books and a few workbooks.

Today, I'm doing things differently, I now spend money on things like stock paper, art supplies, books and whateve we need from a craft store to do projects. I also purchase books from rainbow resource that I can't find at the library. I really like books that the Charlotte Mason method call "living books" these books are readable and also can be read aloud. My kids love these types of books and it is amazing what they are learning. They are in story form and we have living books for "history," "science," "math," and just about every subject.
I test a book to be living by reading the first page. If the book keep my attention or my child's attention and is not dull or boring, then it is living.

The American Girl series is one set that could be called "living" in our home.

Hello, I'm new here and learning...but would like to gather informatoin on how I can do this..mly situation is I'm a single mom and financially I need an income. lol I am an educator by degree..and am desiring to not work in the schools as I have been. Presently my daughter and I are in a Montessori charter school in southwets Florida.....we are moving towards putting her in the
Waldorf school if unschooling isn't an option for me yet financially.....anyway any ideas and suggestions would be helpful..even stories.....!

Thanks!

Hello, I'm near St. Augustine. I unschool 2 kids, boy 14, and girl 8.

I also co-moderate a "homeschool" support group called Splash homeschoolers. Splash's group has member who use various kinds of methods. We don't meet much, due that our group leader had to return to work and her dd is in high school (all AP classes as I have been told and doing well) The reason I have taken on the co-moderator to help keep the group active.

I signed up with Florida Unschoolers as my Umbrella school so I didn't have to deal with the county. Nance was so helpful when I pulled my kids out of PS.

My kids used to attend the Florida School for the deaf and blind (they are hard of hearing: HOH) I really didn't see any progress in their learning and what they did learn was so limited because the expectation of the "educators" at the deaf school didn't expect much. I know my kids and they can learn anything if given the chance and the resources.

The 8 yo came home last year unable to read and after working together, she is reading chapter books, I let her pick any book at the library. She loves reading all kinds of books.

My 14 yo, wanted something that he could do himself. We found a curricullum with Christian light education and he was soared every since. He loves that he can use the keys/teacher's book to check his work himself. He also loves his DS/gameboy games and playing games on the internet. He likes that he doesn't have to sit all day doing bookwork but can go his pace and do as much or little as he likes.

We are looking at other resources now for next year on things he would like to study.
