controversy/conversation ..... You can't waste too much time explaining your family dynamics to friends and relatives ..... they just won't get it.  My dad is supportive.  My mom doesn't comment b/c she doesn't want division, for her own selfish reasons.  Then there are the ones that think they're the voice for the entire family from Abuela to the unborn, lol.  According to one of my relatives we're "tribal, little house on the praire wannabes"....

Shalom!  Shalom!  I am so excited to have found this site!  My husband and I have been discussing homeschooling for over a year and we just stepped out in belief and have begun our plan to start it next fall!  I would love to connect with some folks so that our babies have other children to network with.  We are in Richmond, VA.  I am willing to travel or meet half way at some facility, library, etc where the kids can interact.  I am so happy to have found some kin somewhere.  It is my goal to develop some system that I can share with others.

Lol! My ma in law thinks we have too many children as well. We have 3! She had 5!!! Lol! She's a teacher...joy!! To her, we are ruining our children's lives. I told her not to confuse school with education. I will give her credit though, she hasn't commented in a while. :-)

At first my parents questioned our co-sleeping when the girls were younger. As time has gone on they've become much more supportive. Here I was thinking my dad really gets unschooling, but then he says to me "since she's almost 7 she'll probably want to start more book work" What! Ah well, at least they support us in our journey.

My in-laws have always thought I wanted to be white - whatever that means. They think we have too many kids, I should be working instead of teaching my young black daughters to be a mother and wife. They don't get it and I don't care that they don't get it.

This is what works for us, and they are learning WAY more than how to be a wife and mother.

yup, i don't explain either. My mom doesn't question, in fact, she is VERY supportive! My dad is whatever, whatever i do is fine with him. The in laws are a different story, but it seems like they got the clue & don't really bother anymore. And, then strangers, if they ask they tell...i haven't gotten any negative feedback so far but my kids are small and that may change.

Controversy/conversation...I love it!!! I get that same reaction from my family. I just stopped explaining my family to my extended family. This is our life, and our journey. With my mom, I do try and help her understand that this is part of our roots. I ask why do you want to give all the credit to white folks? Lol.

Hi!  We're in Glendale, AZ.  Looks like this is a small group from all over - so the chances for face-to-face are slim.  However, there is no reason we can't start up a little controversy/ conversation and learn from each other.  (I'll start...)  I'm wondering how your extended families respond to your parenting style.  Mine finds my AP, unschooling leanings to be decidedly "white".  Just wondering how ya'll have handled this if its been an issue for you...

Hi! We're in the Bahamas. I have 2 boys: Leijah-4 & Lathan-1 (both April babies). We started off with the idea of homeschooling (as in schooling at home), but unschooling felt more *natural* to me....and so our journey began! I'm still a little on the fence with how i am doing, but i'm trying to stay confident! So glad to have found this group!
