You're looking at locations other than Roan mountain I believe. That's a state site and they list cabin locations at several different places. Just call the phone number at the link and reserve there. Those other locations aren't even at Roan Mountain.

Roan has 30 cabins and they are numbered. #1-20 has certain features and #21-30 have slightly different features.

If you call the number on the upper left corner of that page, they'll help you with everything.

Finally, we've got something figured out. woohooo!!:)

What we're doing this time around, is asking everyone to book their cabins directly with the site so it will be first come, first serve. There are plenty of cabins and I've been told they haven't got much booked as of this moment. So we should be fine.

The site?
You're going to love it! Roan Mountain TN is our location. It's a beautiful state park with loads of cabins and a conference center for our activities.

Call them to book your cabin...there are cabins with a queen bed and two singles in the loft. Other cabins have a double bed with two other doubles in the loft. I think all of them also have a sleeper chair so large families should be pretty comfy. Smaller families should use this site to organize shared cabins if you wish and let one person book with the site.

I asked them if families with more than 6 would have any problem renting a cabin and they just said "it's been done before". So I get the feeling they aren't capacity nazi's or anything. If you need to fit 7 or 8 I'm sure it could be done with extra sleeping bags and willingness to get cozy!;)

Our date is Sunday November 2nd and Monday November 3rd. I am asking all families who participate to donate $20 towards renting the conference center for the day on Monday (it's $200 for the whole day, if we get enough money we will rent it a second day).

All cabins have HEAT and full kitchens!! It will be cold up on the mountain at that time of year, but it's usually beautiful and clear. Roan mountain has abundant wildlife, nature trails etc... with views of the surrounding mountains. Maybe we can get a park ranger to set up something fun for us, a hike or other activity.

I hope to see you there!! This can be our "un-thanksgiving". But does that make me ungrateful? Hmmmmmmmm..........

I'd like to have one night be a potluck gathering (maybe when we have the conference center) so we'll talk more about that latah. When you get your space reserved, go ahead and post here so we can start making plans and getting ready.

I don't think anything has been decided. :)
I posted that before we talked though.

Here's the rub...
The Nolichucky site is way too expensive for what you get in my opinion. I'm not in favor of that one after doing more research.

The bunk house (dorm style) is $15 per person, per night. There are only two cabins available and both are up around $100 per night and only sleep 4. So even with the bunkhouse and hostel (which is $9 per person, per night) you'd be paying up around $75 or so for a family my size.

The cabins up at Roan mountain have heat (No such luck at Nolichucky) and other amenities many families would like and Susan can get those for $70 per night and they sleep six. Smaller families could share, larger families have plenty of space.

I keep rolling the Nolichucky site around but it never comes out as good as other sites for the price and amentities.

It's also not available Oct. 18 or 25 so we'd be stuck with November for sure. If we do November I want HEAT baby!!

So I vote for Roan mountain. Lotsa space available, lots of heat and such...

As to the date...I'm still in favor of late October because Susan is planning an art retreat in November and it's going to get harder and harder for me to be off work on weekends. November is virtually impossible for a Saturday off but October is a maybe.

What about the weekend of Oct. 24th? I would have called Roan by now but their office hours are over at 4:30 and I've not been home during the day the last couple of days.

I'm jonesing for an unschooling campout as close as physically possible to Me! since I have sooooo little time and funds this year. I'd love to come hang with y'all in October! any weekend except the last one, that is.

Ok, Laura and some other friends here were talking about booking a campout in October. As soon as we can talk to some of the campgrounds (I still want to check on Roan mountain since Susan can get a discount up there and there are plenty of cabins) I'll post a date.

We'll start by reserving a chunk of space and when it fills that's it. Eventually we might be able to book an entire site, but this will be a good start!
