Comment by Amber on August 21, 2011 at 11:07am Hey all!
My name is Amber and we are unschoolers currently living in Upstate New York looking to move to the area asap. One of the primary reasons for relocating to the Carolinas, is that we have little to no support here in the way of others who adopt our same philosophies to life. There are some and thankfully I've been able to "bring over" some to the organic learning side but mostly new parents on the path. I have a 13 (will be 14 in 3 day) yr old son and 11 yr old daughter. My son attended public school up until 3rd grade, my daughter never. My son has one or two friends but they live very busy lives that leave little time to spend socializing and my daughter has no one; her best friend moved to Asheville six years ago. Anyway, to get to the point, we are really reaching out hoping to find that there are others in the area with whom we can connect now and hope to be able to spend time with once we are there. Our only sure chance right now rests on a job opportunity in Greenville, SC and we are interested in living just over the border in Polk county, NC. Are there any of you out there living in Tryon, Saluda or Columbus?
Hey Carolinians. I'm joining this network and group with a specific agenda: I have a 1-year old now, she'll be school age eventually. My wife and I both work (trust me, one of us would quit if we could). I'm going to start navigating through what's legal re: unschooling, if you have to go through the "home-school" route, is there a way to get a daycare to set up an unschool-age class, etc.
The daycare we use now is enacting Emergent Curriculum, which when I heard the presentation, reminded me of what I think unschooling is: accepting that kids will guide their own education, and that optimal learning/life skills come from what kids (people) are interested in.
Anyway, I talked to the director of our daycare about it in passing, and she said, "I don't even think we [the daycare center] would be legally allowed to do that." And I didn't know either. So...I'm just starting my research now.
Also, hey, I'm in Greensboro, maybe one day we'll meet some of you.
Comment by Lisa Meentemeyer on December 12, 2010 at 10:28am Hello from N. Charlotte (Davidson,NC.) So glad to have found others out there who have made this same wonderful life choice. I have two boys ages 8 and 11 who would love to meet other unschoolers in our area. We lived in N. California before moving to NC six years ago and have only been unschooling for two years now. We love our new unschooling life and our children have regained their natural curiosity and passion for learning once again! They can't wait to meet new friends having the same free spirit. We love doing anything outdoors! Anyone in the group in this area?
