Within an hour drive is fine.
I recently moved to Desert Hot Springs. Is there anyone in this area?
Wow! That is one expensive conference! Guess we''re not going...
Thank you so much!!! We are being pressured to get into the public school system by our family members that we just started living with. They don't understand that radically un-schooling has been a way of life for us for many years now.
Check out Wide Sky Days Unschooling Conference in San Diego coming up any weekend now. I'm sure it would be a great place to meet other SD county unschoolers.
Looking for an un-schoolers in the San Marcos, California area...desperately!
Here is Sky Mountain's website: http://skymountaincs.org/.
They give us $1600/year to use through their vendors .. classes, materials, supplies. I make a purchase order, give it to my Educational Specialist (ES), and she places the order. We mainly use funds for classes (ie horseback riding, fencing, YMCA) or supplies (ie printer ink - my fave purchase), but did purchases some computer games and books on cd last year.
They do not provide curriculum, but you can purchase secular materials through their vendors.
We meet with our ES every 20 (think that's right) school days, and offer insight into "new learning". So I bring photos of dd (ie) at her American Girl Meeting for Social Studies, at a tidepool field trip for Science, and cooking at home for Math; and she might read a page in a book for English.
Like any other public school, the kids are required to participate in state testing. I don't want to get into a discussion or debate here about that. As a mom of a solely public schooled kid (she just graduated high school), I know the issues with testing. BUT I also know that if I accept the charter school funds, I need to accept all that comes with it. My younger dd was actually ok with testing .. she said it was fun, even though the first year she wasn't even reading.
We do plan to stay with Sky Mountain for the first semester of this next school year, but then will be fulltime RVing and am not sure it will work for us.
iane, thanks so much for posting that link for the Private school affadivit. I have been completely lost as to how to go about truly unschooling my kids this year. We have been enrolled in K12 but pretty much doing the bare minimum of the requirements and unschooling the rest of the way. I went that route because I wasn't sure how else I could do it legally. Also the curriculum and materials they send is a nice bonus since I wouldn't be able to afford anything otherwise. I'm a disabled single mother struggling really really hard to keep my kids out of public school. The charter school you mentioned sounds very interesting, I would love to know more about it.
Thanks for the link, Diane.... will read through it in a bit! ~ M.
We unschool in Laguna Hills, though will be fulltime RVing starting in November .. primarily within 1 day's drive from So. CA. My younger dd is 9 (always unschooled) and my older dd is starting at CSULB in August (always public schooled).
Super easy to homeschool in CA, just complete a Private School Affidavit online ( http://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/ps/rq/). We did that the 1st year, but then joined Sky Mountain Charter School for the funding, as they support unschooling .. though do have mandatory testing.
I own/moderate a park day group in So. OC (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SOC_homeschoolers/) .. not specifically for unschoolers, but great group of families. We have a weekly park day during the "school" year, lots of field trips, MNOs, and a huge Girl Scout troop.
Hope to see some of you at CHN (I'm managing Used Curriculum Sale on Sunday) or at HSC!
