I have been homeschooling for the past 5 years but want to unschool. I live in southern Alberta and want to know how to work it with the facilitator when they come to check the kids work books and I can't show them much paper work.

Hi Everyone! I just joined and have a very stressful question! How do I go about registering my son as an Unschooling in Alberta? We just started and each time my boss asks if I have registered him with Alberta Distance Learning and I have to say no. She works for our school system up here as her daytime job. I been reading and I am not understanding. Someone break it down for me please? I want to Unschool him not Homeschool him with Alberta Distance Learning. I tried that and all that we did was fight with him because he does not do well in any kind of deadline type schooling. I was getting emails asking for his work.

The thing about "what do teens do when it rains" is really to help me help my 15yo son get more excited about the idea of coming! He loooooves to skate, and we have a good skatepark just down the road where we live now, so a few times a day he will tend to sing out, "I'm heading out for a skate!" and be off. If he's stuck inside for whole days at a time, he gets bored. Although that did recently lead to him teaching himself some songs on the piano lol, so yeah, *I* know that there's plenty to do inside, but he seems to need physical outlets, and skateparks are no good in the rain. I'm surprised there's only one small indoor park, but I guess skating's just not as big there as here in Oz perhaps?

Either way, I'm sure it would be a GREAT experience to come, and he is actually excited about the idea. He wasn't so excited with our original idea, which was the UK! He also wasn't excited by my idea of Boulder, Colorado, where there is a strong unschooling group. He thinks Canadians seem heaps nice hey! :)

Still not fully sure of which area, but Vancouver really does look lovely. I've heard though that it's very hard to live on one income there, and we'd like to have spare money for travel.

I dream of going to Prince Edward Island which is a loooooong way from Vancouver! Maybe we should live at Nova Scotia lol!

Rent is expensive in the Greater Vancouver area, for sure.

What do your kids like to do?

In WA (with similar weather), we watch movies, tv, read, draw on the computer, play MMORPGs, play games on a Nintendo DS, talk with friends on FB, have friends over. And we go outside, too, even when it rains. Pretty much everything you do in sun, you can do in rain here :-)

Awesome, thanks for the info! Can't wait to hear more. We're currently looking into rental prices (gasp!), job opportunities, and skate parks lol.

P.S What do teens do when it rains? :)

Hi Rynalee,

There are many unschoolers and radical unschoolers in Vancouver. That's where where my family is from, even though we live in WA state, now.

Skye, the owner of the group, is just outside of Vancouver. Hopefully, she'll jump in to say hello :-)

BTW, B.C. is a very good province in which to unschool.

Hi everyone, we're a radical unschooling family from Australia, thinking of relocating to Canada for 12 months next year. We're considering British Columbia, probably the Vancouver area. Keen to find out a bit more about the area, and if there are any other radical unschoolers living there, or even just unschoolers.

We're moving to the Lethbridge, Alberta area and would love to meet other unschoolers when we arrive. We won't be there until late winter or early spring in 2013. At any rate, it's great to see that there are fellow unchoolers in Canada.
