Just now checking in. I didn't see Shawn J.'s comments but, ugh! From what I understand, she plans to go on tour with other gymnasts for four months or something. Will she be attending public school then? No, she'll be "homeschooling" probably using the public school's curriculum. Maybe she'll be sending in her schoolwork to her teachers at Valley? Still, there's so much about public school that she has not and will continue to not be a part of. All the icky stuff; the rules and disrespectful manner that some teachers and personnel treat the kids. She'll miss out on the cliques and the peer pressure to conform. She certainly didn't get where she is because of public schools. If anything she got there in spite of public schools.

Oh well, I gave up caring what society thinks about homeschooling, a while ago. We've never had much interaction with mainstream society so I guess we've been sort of sheltered from the anti-homeschooling attitudes -- by choice.

The cycle of unschooling is really strange. And I never really understood it before and still don't. I think people want to be unschoolers but it is a lot of work and commitment. Plus I think there is so much pressure for kids to go to school from friends and neighbors, and extended family. It is really sad. I was flat out sickened yesterday watching Shawn Johnson on TV talking at the Golden Homecoming for her last night in Iowa. She was questioned about her education by an old and well meaning MT Olive Lutheran teacher. Shawn Johnson said she is public school girl all the way or something like that. gag. I think that is a shame. Shawn was trying to explain how she was able to do school by making up work teachers had given her. She did not have a tutor. And to make the teacher questioning her feel better and get herself out of the question she said she 'couldn't live w/o public school.' Cliff and I both cringed at that.

I hate all the messages out there but I don't really care what people think. We love our life!

Hey Vicki, I'm not very good at all these different networking things -- I just now saw your August 12 response. The NBTSP was good - well attended, mostly by homeSCHOOLERS but that's okay. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Missed you though!

Heather -- apparently not! LOL! I'm still unconvinced that there are but a few raduns in Iowa. Hey, I just made that up "raduns." Tee hee.

Hey Chris..just now saw your question!! I WISH!!! Don't think I haven't thought about it. We're still in CO, but we almost left for NE...that would have been great. You know my BFF in IL has been wanting me to come out..maybe I can swing it, and plan it around the picnic. HMMMMMM........

Have a fabulous week! I do hope this weather never stops.

Peace!
