Greetings all, we have 5 children and are located in the Marshfield/Seymour area. Would like to meet up with other unschoolers so our children can be around other children.

Here is an unschooling study a friend is conducting; please feel free to take part! :)

This is from a friend in the alternative education field who is researching
unschooling. If you unschool and want to participate in her survey, please feel
free; she would really appreciate it! :)

Re: Qualitative research project

Hello parent(s)/guardian(s):

We are conducting a qualitative research project on unschooling
mothers/families.

The purpose of this study is to describe the experiences, perspectives and
day-to-day experiences of
progressive homeschooling (unschooling) mothers/families. The information we
gather for this project
will be used for various academic purposes, such as publications in books and
journals along with
professional presentations.

The information you share will be kept confidential.

You are receiving this note because you were identified as a potential
participant. Please note the
procedural requirements for participation in this research study:

1. Face-to-face interview of approximately 70 minute duration (possibly up to
two follow-up
interviews, but only if you are willing, of course). Phone interviews can be
done if geographical
distance is too much.
2. Honest, open reflection regarding your unschooling experiences and
perspectives.

The subject population for this study is unschooling families -
parent(s)/guardian(s) 18 years or older,
either biologically male or female, who self identify as progressive and engaged
in homeschooling (often
termed "unschooling").

The following definition of unschooling will be the criteria for participation:
Families which engage in homeschooling their children in such a way that allows
the student
some self-direction on what is studied, when, and how. Families that follow a
form of
homeschooling that is self-directed in nature and seeks to avoid reproducing the
learning
structures of school in the home.

If you are interested in participation in this study, please reply to the
researchers, Sandra Schneider at
sschneider@... or Kristan Morrison kmorrison12@... for further
information such
as interview scheduling or any additional information you may need to aid you in
making your decision.
Additionally, if you know of other parent(s)/guardian(s) who may be interested
please forward this
message to him or her.

We hope to hear from you soon!

If you would prefer, please call Sandra Schneider (540-831-5302) or Kristan
Morrison (540-831-7120)
regarding your participation.

Sincerely,

Sandra Schneider and Kristan Morrison

Hi Missourians.  We are in Madison county, southeast Missouri - about 1 hr west of Cape Girardeau and 1 hr north of Poplar Bluff, 30 mins south of Farmington.  Anyone here in that general vacinity ?

Hi all!  We live in the ozarks of Southwest Missouri and started homeschooling our son this year.  We began by deschooling him and allowing him to recover from the ideas he learned in public school.  To my amazement, by doing very little actual "schoolwork" he began progressing in SO many ways!  He also has special needs and I have been so delighted to see that when we were able to get away from the "label" and just let him be his beautiful self, he blossomed.  We are now becoming believers in unschooling, simply by seeing it work.  I am so excited to find a group of other people to talk to!  I would also love to find a group in this area that would be able to organize trips and activties!  I look forward to this journey so much!

Hi everyone!

I just thought I would introduce myself. I am Alethea. I have 3 travel guides in this life, DD 11, DS 7, DD15 mo. We live in NW Missouri. I am new to the network. We have been unschooling since we brought my oldest home from school 5 years ago. We have always unschooled, but then I or my husband freak out a little and get all controlly, because of the HS law here in the state. Eventually we get back in line again. I am learning to let go. I know that my kiddos are a lot happier when I let go and trust in them. Especially the oldest.

How do you all reconcile your style of learning with the law. What do you keep as a record of evaluation? We keep a scrapbook of our activites as a portfolio and a large box with papers and stories and lapbooks and other projects with dates. I try and keep a diary everyday with times and then I translate that into a hour diary as best as I can.

I look forward to chatting with all of you. It is nice to know that I am not the only Unschooling mom in the state.  :)

We're on the North Side of STL.  My kids are 7 and 2, and my 7 year old has an intense social need that's not quite being met.  We're involved in other homeschool groups, but they are more curriculum-oriented, and thus more structured/less free time. Winter is rough.  Kung fu and play day are apt to get canceled due to weather, and the other kids/parents don't seem to be interested or able to get together for more informal play.  He doesn't want to do co-op classes.  Any other ideas for activities for a highly social child?  Any groups that meet regularly in the St. Louis area?  Any St. Louis or St. Charles folks want to get together?  We had Earth Scouts, but the organizer stopped, um, organizing. I was thinking about taking over the functions of that group or starting a Jr. First Lego Team.

Hi! I'm from Trenton, MO (North Central) and I would love to meet other unschoolers in the area. My kids are 5 and 4 year old twins, all boys.

Hi all joining in! I'm in rural south-central MO, about an hour from Jeff City.

Kate, the laws in MO are extremely unschooling friendly. I just keep a calendar with some hours written on it and a few samples of the kids work along with a photo cd of outings, projects etc. The calendar hours are what I deem worthy- a nature hike at a local conservation area might be a couple of hours of science, helping with supper might be nutrition and building a birdhouse might be math. Pretty simple! :)
