New York State Unschoolers

I have to agree that it really does seem intimidating to Homeschool or Unschool in New York.  I am also from Rochester,NY but currently reside in North Carolina. I plan on moving back to my hometown, But am hesitant about moving back JUST  because of the NY homeschooling laws.  I could really use some advice and encouragement.  Any pointers, tips and ideas would help tremendously.  Thanks in advance :)

Hello everyone,  It's comforting to know that there is an Unschooling support group in New York.  I currently live in NC but really miss my home in Upstate NY. I'm debating on possibly moving back, but what's preventing me from doing so are the strict laws that NY has to make it difficult to homeschool in this state.  My question is.......how is it even possible to Unschool in NY with these strict laws to abide by?  I would really appreciate some feedback.  Thank you so much.  Honored to be apart of this awesome group:)

For the IHIP I start with the typical course of study for the grade from the World Book Encyclopedia website and add things we will probably do and take off stuff we probably won't. I add a paragraph at the beginnning:

We plan to use many books, library books, games, computer resources, daily life experience, classes outside the home, projects, field trips, videotapes, and audio tapes, apprenticeship and work experience as learning materials and opportunities. The following is a starting point for exploration, and not a rigid plan. We will adapt this curriculum in response to the student’s interests and needs.

 

This paragraph allows us to then go ahead and do what we are going to do, then write a quarterly report that includes a list of what we did by subject area. I keep a weekly journal of things we did to use when writing the Quarterly Report which makes it easy - I also look at our Netflix history and library account history.

Hi all- This is my first year unschooling and I'm loving all the benefits. My kids are only 5 so I did not need to go through all the school paperwork. I'm nervous about sending in all the required documents come July for the 2013-2014 school year. Any advice for this? How do other unschoolers plan out a "curriculum" to please the school? Thanks in advance!

Hello all! My daughter informed me last evening that she would like to be homeschooled...although I am not surprised, I do want to know what resources are out there to be prepared if we decide we can do this. I have all of the NYS regulations, but I am particularly interested in local groups that get together/support each other. I am in Schuyler County....

Erin-
I only check in here from time to time since I too have been pretty unsuccessful in finding someone in my immediate vicinity. As it is you are probably one of the closest to me I've found and you are two hours away. Not sure where you are exactly in the county but I know for a fact there is someone on here that I have met that is also in Oswego. She is on my friends list and maybe I can connect you two.

I was really excited to find this group and hopefully some guidance since I live in Oswego County and don't know of any local unschoolers and I've found the NYS requirements to be rather intimidating, but now I'm not sure how active this group still is based on the most recent discussions. Are you all still around? I need you! :)

Can anyone in this group tell me how to sign out of school precisely. Based on prior knowledge, I know that you need permission from your parents at 16. Do you have to fill out a paper, or attend a meeting/conference? Do you also have to be employed to leave school?
