Hello!

  I am in Southern Oregon in Talent just north of Ashland.  I have a 9 yr old sone and an 8 yr old daughter.  I am working out the kinks to unschool them this year. My son is starting homeschooling next week.  His program ended short of a full school year and they have a curriculum for home instruction to give me.  However I feel that child led learning is the only way for them to really learn anything and am trying to seek out others in my area.  Just for some support and advice.  Anybody out there?  I feel like there MUST be others in this area!

Hi I am Ronda, currently unschooling two of my last five in Boise Idaho. Yes, although maybe pushing it a bit..Idaho is considered PNW. lol  I lived in Seattle for 20 years and although its definitely more PNW, Boise does have a little groove going on over here. Outdoor opportunities abound. The neatest part is Idaho is considered a "Free State"...I don't even have to tell the school system I homeschool. No regs, no paperwork....just do as I please. Yes, it is an unschoolers dream. I have lived in other states and learned how to jump through the hoops, but I have to tell you....this is true freedom. IMHO, every state should strive to be this free. 

Anyway, hello to all, love reading about all the places I know so well around Seattle and Portland, maybe we can meet up during some of our many visits back to the area. PNW rocks. You can also find us at www.leavingthegatepen.com....

Same age isn't as important necessarily....but we've seen where it has been a bit of a problem. Mostly when it starts heading into around 3 years younger. Then it just sort of falls apart. But she has had some positive experiences with kids 2 years behind and up to 3 ahead. We just seemed to fall into the one group there for a while that was ALL younger and all they wanted to do was jump all over her and play jungle gym. While she's open to playing and wrestling, it was getting a bit overwhelming LOL. But yes Robin, the sharing of interests is a key part of formula for success.

We met one home schooled girl that I thought might be perfect. Same relative location etc etc. and same age. That one went way south because of some pretty intense debate over whether or not 2 young 11 year old girls should be able to be at the town park at night and smoking.

They are no longer friends. I'm not terribly rigid. I am however, logical. LOL

Okay! We've had the most luck connecting with other kids of like mind. My daughter tends to form strong friendships with those who share her interests, younger, same age, and older.

If your daughter just wants to meet a variety of kids her age, then that's cool, too .

I know of a great unschooling family who moved from Miami to Port Angeles. Their kids are slightly older and slightly younger than your daughter. you can check her blog and maybe drop her an email. I don't know how involved she is with community but her kids are some of the most amazing kids I've ever met. http://thenewhuntergatherer.blogspot.com/

She is pretty much open minded to anything at this point. She loves art. It is difficult to keep her in sketch books! But she loves the outdoors too. She is beginning to get into fashion (as much as any kid can out in the middle of the woods) At this point it had more to do with trying to meet people who are within the same age range for her.

There is a lovely home schooling group on Port Angeles that we still technically belong too but there are some folks in it that are not keen to open minded schooling and they are mostly either much older or much younger. No real in between at around Heather's age. So we sort of pulled out of it for that reason. She was either babysitting at these functions or teens just weren't interested.

But to recap it, we are pretty much open to just meeting someone within the age group and taking it from there. Part of the fun, just meeting folks if we can.
