Hi everyone, I am new to unschooling. Have two girls aged 4 and 8, and a third on the way. Currently live between Southampton and Portsmouth, near the Fareham area, but will be moving to Wokingham in the next few months, and would love to meet up with some fellow minded parents in those areas!

Tracy, you might find teen unschoolers at the Shepton Mallet group that meets up every fortnight on a Tuesday afternoon at the scout hall. Their yahoo group is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Mendiphomeed/

hi folks,I'm new here-mum to 2 lovely boys one at home, one at school. i unschool my 6 year old, and my 13 yeay old when he's not at school(his choice), i am at the beginning of a huge learning curve, the path were on feels the most and comfortable, though my husband has his doubts, he is trusting me, does anyone have a partner who's not quite so sure about radical unschooling.

I have been unschooling Lenny for a year, though when he first came out of school i tried work books, so we have naturally fallen into this rhythm, i would find it hard to ever go back.

The hardest thing for me is letting go of t.v, bedtimes, ds, i am trying but i have a tired boy, who wants to stay up and watch dvd and play ds for most of the day!! that is hard to get my head round!

think ive posted in the wrong place!! meant to say hi, any unschoolers in Cornwall!!

hi - I'm involved in organising the unschooling camp in dorset. You're very welcome to come along to that, we'd love to see you. However, it is obviously a long way for you to come from Scotland, so if you can't get to it because of the distance, why not just organise something yourself?

This time last year, I knew no other unschoolers in the UK and was really feeling the need to find some, so I posted something on this forum to see if anyone would want to meet. It took me out of my comfort zone, but from here and the UnschoolingUK Yahoo list, 4 families got together in a park one day. We had a great time, and from there, it gathered pace, turned into a regional group and we've made some brilliant friends along the way. It's made a huge difference to me and my family to be able to hang out with other unschooling families.

Last year, some of us from that regional group went camping for a long weekend as a fairly last minute arrangement. Had such a great time that we went for another weekend as soon as we could before the season was over, and started plotting for a longer/bigger camp for this year.

Some of the activities we've done as a group have involved a level of organisation, but most have been a case of saying 'anyone fancy meeting up at this place on that date' (including the camping). I'd definitely recommend giving it a go!!

PS just to be clear, the camp is just a camp, there are no speakers or organised forums. It's very informal and is 'just' the chance to hang out with other people following an unschooling approach, and chat and play with people who get what you're doing and why!

Are there any more informal unschooling camp type (ones where kids can come along) events in the UK this year?

i'm a single parent too and in Scotland, so dissappointed not to be able to go.  I couldn't even make it to the Edin one, as again couldn't leave the LO for that long.  Monika, whereabouts in Scotland are you?

Hiya, my name is Joanna. I'm married and have three children, two of which have left home, one who we home school. Our beloved youngest son became very depressed at school, so did we. Our son has been 'labelled' as having Asperger's Syndrome. We  believe he has been misdiagnosed, and this diagnosis was given because school psychologists and 'experts' could not categorise him in school. Our family was almost destroyed by the school system, and that is something I will never be able to forgive. However, now we are free of it, we are closer, happier and emotionally stronger than we have ever been. Our son was bullied at school, and beaten up. We were also bullied by various schools, bullied into accepting what the schools thought. We never accepted anything they told us. But it still gives me the shivers that prior to realising we could home educate, we were actually bullied into believing our son was 'a problem'. Our son has NEVER been the problem. The only 'problem' is the global education system. I say global because he has been educated in mainstream schools in three different countries. NEVER AGAIN!!!!

I plan to have some books there, at £15 for The Big Book of Unschooling and £9 for Moving a Puddle, but if anyone wants to buy one in advance, Lulu is producing books in Europe now (Sweden, I think, but not certain) and you can order one without the cost of international shipping from New Mexico.  They have a discount until April 30, $4.95 off of shipping (which is the cost of priority mail within the U.S., which is where they got that number).  http://sandradodd.com/booksale

I'm working on notes for my talk today. :-)
