Cob Building - A great idea and a site with loads of cob building project pictures

... and a Yurt wouldn't Hurt either!

This is a resort yurt on the California coast This is a ski resort yurt

Here's a site where someone replaced a crumbling cabin with a yurt and decided to make the dwelling permanent

A Beautiful People with a Beautiful Idea

Thanks to Sandra Dodd, I found Boing Boing and subscribed. On there was this great community enhancement idea (or whatever you call it). Songhai is what it's called in Africa. It's located right in...

Community

Other than unschooling principles, what do you think makes a good basis for community.... making it happen and keeping it flourishing?

Katherine mentioned intergenerational; check out the pics/videos at Bioliberty Projects. Three story green building in Slidell LA, with geo-thermal in the basement and Solar PV on the rooftop!

BioLiberty.ning.com

Bioliberty is teamed up with VeteransGreenJobs.org to provide training to veterans/contractors to make their own diesel for using in construction projects/vehicles...let me know if this is something you would like to help promote on the unschooling networks.

I met a woman at a conference recently for something completely other than unschooling. We were talking about things and it turned out she had a 30 yo and they had lived an unschooling life. So cool! What a pioneer. Like a lot on here. Yeah, I like the idea of lots of ages in the mix.

Anyone thinking about specific places?

Sometimes I go on realtor.com and look at places w/ lots of beautiful space. I love VT. I went to school there and miss it. We go when we can get there. I dream of buying land and starting something. I really want to do that some time in the not so distant future.

You know, I had not seen that mentioned... intergenerational. I feel that's important, and actually it's one of the things about the main lists that isn't emphasized but I think is definitely there. The sharing and handing around of knowledge from those who've been there done that in unschooling. That's a kind of intergenerationality (is that a real word?... long).

Thanks for adding your comments into the mix, and if you find those questions you were hunting or think of them again or find some others to add... bring 'em on.

Yesterday I saw a whole lot of questions about this and now I can't find them. It's my middle of the night and maybe I'm just mumbling around and can't see.

I've been looking into co-housing. I love the idea. There has been only one place that spoke of respecting children as full players in the community. That felt good. And w unschoolers and people who are open to that kind of thinking would be amazing.

I would love to do something like this w/ a varied community. Different kinds of housing. Definitely our own house and private space and lots of shared space for the community. And intergenerational. I think that's cool.

Here's site about cohousing. I don't anything about it but it seems to help in clarifying what each group wants and how to manifest it. http://www.cohousingresources.com/book.asp

OK, just not somewhere hot and near a cool city.

One of my favorite Tolkien quotes is that he considered himself to be, in all ways but size, a hobbit (I paraphrased).

I dream of a hobbit house built right into the side of a hill. I feel most like a hobbit really...oh yes.
Love good food, wine, gardening, socializing, generally enjoying life...all of the things a hobbit is about are my very favorite things in life.:)

We have no community either, Brenda. Bluh... making one is what this is all about. Thanks for joining us here. I need all the California sensibility I can get.

Kass, share any of your ideas. I love the yurt thought and want to learn more about it. Portability really appeals to me. I think that's one of the reasons I enjoy making art that's portable. I don't stretch my canvas onto frames because hanging them onto 2 inch slats not only makes them more accessible but also emphasizes the fabric too. I also was so enamored of metalsmithing and the stuff I made were little artsy hinges and things. To go with my love of bookmaking. I want to sew more of those. Still have my equipment but naturally I need more materials. So as you can see, your yurt has been very inspirational.

I want a beautiful white lime washed curlicue arabesque cabin hut. A little hobbit house just for me, Ren. Let's get going with the lovely mud. Yes.

I absolutely love the pic of that cob house you posted! That is something I've dreamed about for a long time. I need to quit dreaming and figure this thing out!:)

This sounds so wonderful to us. We have NO community and LOVE conferences just for the feel.
