It's MLK Day and I blogged: http://pvmaro.blogspot.com/2011/01/mlk-2011.html

I grew up in the Jim Crow South and was active in Civil Rights in the early-to-mid 60s. I was in two marches which Dr. King participated in. RIP, Martin, and everyone else who was murdered because they stood up for their Constitutional rights.

Well, ya know you piqued my interest with the consumerism comment, given that I previously stated that I'm not comfortable with our cultural acceptance of wealth as a social value. Having said that, I live and function in this Capitalist society, so money is at the core of most discussions and exists in pretty much any discussion. I've come to accept that we dislike talking about money as much as we dislike talking about death. To me this is an odd skittishness for a culture which is primarily Capitalist, so money has a strong focus, and Christian, so death and what comes after it is another strong focus. Nonetheless, we certainly don't like to talk about either of those. Me, I just do the best I can. Some days, that feels pretty good. Other days, not so much.

Actually, Frank, if I were to pose a question on the subject of consumerism it would be along the lines of "is agonizing over consumerism a twisted form of bourgeoisie arrogance, or am I just feeling oversensitive this year?" I do have something to actually discuss, though, on a somewhat different topic... I'll start a new thread once I get it composed. I'm not nearly as good at starting topics as I am jumping in and sharing my rather overheated viewpoint ;)

Jeeze, Meredith, couldn't you have waited to post that until after I finished my Christmas shopping?

A good topic for after the holiday shopping season - commercialism or perhaps materialism. Anyone want to take a stab at framing that in the form of a question?

Meredith, thanks for your warm welcome. I'm surprised that this group didn't experience a membership explosion when you opened it beyond "racism" to the broader topic of "social justice." Having grown up in the Jim Crow South, I certainly have my own perspective on White privilege.

I'm always interesed in sex... even if you do mean it as a parallel topic of social justice, rather than a fun, interpersonal sport. (wink) And in the overall context of social justice, I think classism is another significant sore point in this country. Our zeitgeist of Capitalist wealth as a core social value bothers me greatly.

But sex is always good!

Glad to see you, Frank!

As more people join, I wouldn't mind seeing some brainstorming of ideas for topics, if anyone has something in particular in mind. Otherwise I'll probably start something on sex eventually.... oh, now that's totally going to get read wrong...
