Thanks Dana for the info. It is becoming less lonely here due to all these lists I have found. Glad to hear about Mary Ellen. Makes me breathe a little easier.

Tessa, I have a 17 yo daughter and we live in Bellingham, so not TOO far from you. She is on here sometimes but is busy writing a novel right now--I'll let her know you are looking for friends :)

Hey, Laura A :)

I grew up in Yakima and know Goldendale well :)

You don't have to do anything in Washington until the year your child turns 8, so you have some years to no worry about it....or be like me, never worry about it ;) After that, you must either have your child evaluated by a teacher or tested annually--but there are unschooling-friendly teachers (Mary Ellen in the Tri Cities, to name one!) who are happy to evaluate (Mary Ellen--are you on here? Chime in!)

If you are looking for more info on unschooling, I think the best site is Joyce Feteroll's site-- http://www.joyfullyrejoycing.com/

Welcome to unschooling! Dana

HI-
I guess you could say I am radical unschooling "curious". My son is 5 and missed the kindergarten cut-off thankfully. So I am reading and learning. I live out in Goldendale (about 1 hours south of Yakima). I am wondering if anyone radical unschools near me. I am interested in what you have to do on a yearly basis to satisfy the state regarding your child's academic process. There is a homeschooling group in town, but from what I heard most are very religious and school at home, and while I am sure I can find some value in that, I am not religious and find it a bit intimidating. Thanks in advance. PS- Reading Sandra Dodd's Big Book of Unschooling and it is very thought provoking. I am really enjoying it.

That should be "if you'd like"

I'm in Issaquah. My daughter is 14, so maybe not who your son might want to have a playdate with :-)

However, if you like to connect with some families who have younger kids, feel free to check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WashingtonRadicalUnschoolers/

Welcome back, Sharon, Dick & Maia! We'd be up for a get-together any place.

We're back, too, from Costa Rica...home-exchanging on Whidbey (near Clinton) and hanging out at the cabin near Concrete. Any interest in a get-together in either place? Or just getting together any place:) We'd like to get up to Vancouver for two or three days as well...anyone want to swap their place there for a couple of days at our cabin on the Skagit? I'll post in the PNW group as well.

I'm really cold.
