Just a heads up that you are all so BLESSED who live in Florida! Do NOT take one day of sunshine for granted! It has been cold and rainy in PA. and that can make one very blue. So enjoy basking in your warm sunny weather...and Joyful Laura...looki...

Hi BetteAnne,

I have no idea at this point what to do about the conference. Apparently everyone was more interested in a conference that was held before mine that cost double what I am asking for registration. What really annoys me through all this is I had posted somewhere down the line that I was thinking of doing a conference. Then I got an e-mail from someone wanting to do a joint conference in Maryland though I thought Lancaster County was a great place to have it. When I nicely said no, the person seemed a bit snippy then went and took alot of my ideas and ran with it. Also the conference was conveniently scheduled before mine. My whole idea was to make it a fun time without having to sit and listen to others tell you how to unschool, and/or why to unschool. Isn't unschooling all about making your own decisions your way and in your own time?
The speakers I have scheduled didn't require payment, with the exception of the altered books workshop which sounded awesome! That is what kept the cost down, having parents and kids lead workshops such as; bread making, herbal teas and remedies, unschooling as a single parent, and I had an ubnschooling evaluator that was going to talk about what is needed to evaluate an unschooler. There were more, but you get eh idea. They were all meant to be fun and/or informative, not to teach you "how to unschool", or "why". If you don't already know why or how then it doesn't sound to me that you are really ready for it. It takes a certain mind set and you either have it or you don't.
Sorry to go on and on, but it just really aggravates me to see the fun time I had planned along with everyone else just dissolve because of too many "things" in a month span.
We have been an unschooing family ever since I attended a John Holt conference way back in the 80's when we were living in Boston. It changed my life and my childrens. There was no keynote speaker, no one was trying to shove the concept down my throat. It was a very simple, informative question and answer type of forum. The rest of the conference focused on the fun and ease of being an unschooler. There were plenty people available throughout the day to answer any questions anyone had.
I was hoping for this to be similar. Frankly I prefer a round table type of forum over listening to speakers any day!
So to answer the questions about are we still having it....unless we get at least 30 reservations by Monday, no. I cannot afford the park rental, or anything else. I stand to lose deposits from the park, book workshop, and ranger programs as it stands right now.
I will never try this again, at least not in this area!

Absolutely. I also know other unschoolers who might be interested. There are many in Ocean Grown Life Learners although they dont all label themselves as unschoolers. It is a 4H group and last year met in Bradley Beach every week. I dont know where we will meet this year.

Hi BetteAnne,

A field trip to Florida? How fun...and warm :)!
Yes, meeting would be great. Except I hate seafood, sorry....anywhere but Red Lobster would be fine with me.
Next week is really bad for me, but after that I am much more flexible, just let me know. You can always e-mail me at; iamhisservant4ever@yahoo.com.
You could alway just come here for lunch also, my daughter is a great cook, and loves to have a chance to cook for more then just us. We can also talk more about how I have handled the district out here.

Hi BetteAnne,
Sorry this took me so long to answer! Yes, we live in Pa, in Lancaster County. There really is nothing in my area for unschoolers. I have no support at all in this area. It doesn't matter any longer, really, my 17 year old daughter has been pretty much on her own for the past few years, seeking and pursuing her own interests. It would have been nice for her to find some friends that were also unschooling, but we have found Lancaster County to be very unfriendly and stand-offish. In many circles, not just homeschool. We have even given up trying to find a church that is truly welcoming and truly trying to create community among the congregation.
My 24 year old son did not want to go to college. He works full time with mentally challenged adults, in a group home, before that he was an assistant dairy manager for a grocery store. My daughter is planning on taking classes this fall to become a massage therapist. She is very into herbs, aromatherapy, reflexology, and good nutrition as well.

We moved here ten years ago from the Boston area. John Holt was my main reason to homeschool. I went to a Growing Without Schooling conference in the late 80's, and that did it for me. I also used the "Moore Formula", with my kids.
So that's what is going on here.
Where is Thornton in relation to Lancaster County? We live in Leola, about 15 minutes outside of Lancaster.
