Um, *I* used to do this all the time when I was little and all through growing up (I'm 30 now)- we got a VCR when I was 5 or 6, and I remember I would watch (among other things) The Dark Crystal over and over, sometimes 6 times a day (and it's a f...

Let's talk about it...how does unschooling affect your parenting style. How do we live in the gap of how we parent and how we *want* to parent. We all want to live a happy, loving, peaceful and connected life with our kids, yet sometimes we need a...

It's good for adults to read enough about child development to know what kids don't understand at all. Do you have a source you really love for this info? I'm on the hunt.

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
Treating all people (and children are included in this definition of "people") with respect and assuming that they have the best intentions, no matter what the result. Trusting my child to make the best choices for himself. Offering support and guidance through his journey of life, when requested. And a lot of love.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
Not long, but my child is only 2 1/2. We've been seriously researching it and reading about it for about a month. But wow, we've come a LONG way in that time! :)
names and ages of children

a little about me
I'm a librarian by training, but a happy SAHM to Silas T. I LOVE to read (especially science fiction and urban fantasy), hang out with other moms and dads, watch movies, cook and EAT! I try to get outdoors as much as possible, but we're still adjusting to the sogginess of Seattle. Our webfeet haven't quite come in all the way yet.

I've been struggling to find my place (role?) in my 2.5 year-old's art journey. I've already written about how I have a bit of visual art-o-phobia. I've been doing some thinking and came up with some questions.

Do you do art WITH your child? If your child is say, painting, do you paint with him/her? Or do you sit and watch? Or do something unrelated nearby, but check in often (i.e. fold laundry)?

I know this is prob… Continue

Some Thoughts About Art

I have art-o-phobia. I should say, I have visual art-o-phobia, because I love to play and create music. But visual art? My chest gets a little tight, I get all these feelings about right and wrong, good and bad, and my perfectionism just rears its very ugly head.

A lot of times I ask Chad to lead the art activities with Silas. I get caught up in hording/rationing materials, cleaning up messes, and generally getting in the way of the process of the experience, which is what it's al… Continue

Connection Parenting

So, I was a little nervous about using this feature, because as a noob, I'm a little embarrassed to be exposing myself to the more experienced folks here. But I'm getting over it. ;)

I'm reading the book Connection Parenting: Parenting through Connection instead of Coercion, Through Love instead of Fear by Pam Leo. It's one of those book with… Continue
