I agree with the above postings - time to find another dentist. Our dentist has no problem with me being with my kids if they want me there - & they are 12 & 14 now. In fact, he & his staff are fascinated with our unschooling ways - they are full ...

What is up with reading the captions on tv? I've had to set those things to disappear, come back and they are on again. My boys will watch a Spanish or foreign language film with both languages flashing. Now that is too much. I usually have to cho...

Oliver Twist was that way for me--very different each time I read it, over the years. I haven't read it since I've been a mom. I'm afraid it would be too sad. It hadn't occurred to me that it's the same with science and other things too! Nice ide...

I like being 'Rue's Husband' - no need to be in the spotlight ALL the time, is there?

Hi Christine,
thank you... yes, a beautiful gift to allow myself to grow back into myself!
BTW, I LOVE the picture of you and your husband at the ocean!
What a great reminder that sometimes we ARE alone with our sweeties!

Hi Christine,
It all worked out...:) And sorry we missed you all. We had a great day - after visiting the Biltmore we walked around Ashville with the Kreams and others. We ended up at Alice's house for dinner. Our whole trip was really good. It was great getting to hang out with you and Phil - finally!

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
It means moving past the "schooling" aspect entirely. It's not just about how we home school but how we as a family live together, grow together & make our way in the world together.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
Since 2004 - both came hand-in-hand after we attended the Live & Learn Conference in Peabody MA that year.
names and ages of children
Kim - 14
Shaun - 12
a little about me
I've been happily married to my partner for life, Phil, since 1992. We've been parenting together since 1994. I'm one of those people who loves to dive deep into some new hobby or interest & thankfully Phil has always supported my explorations. Some of my favorites are: singing, acting, traveling, camping, cooking, cake decorating, watercolor painting, sketching, yoga, pilates, hiking, cycling, gardening, architectural design. Tune in next month for my latest addition!

The Wonderful World of Books

I've been lurking in one of my unschooling yahoo groups during a discussion of books. The gist of the ideas shared was that all types of books, be they standard novels, graphic novels or comic books, have positive value & offer the reader wonderful ways of expressing ideas & stories.

This all triggered some memories for me.

I come from a family of book lovers. My great-grandmother, grandmother, & Mom all read voraciously & all of their homes were filled with books. My dad, when… Continue

Snow Days

Wow - we got snow over night. Lots of snow - maybe a foot or more. The area schools & town offices announced closures yesterday in anticipation.

Kimi's friends from the neighboring towns got all excited - knowing that school was cancelled they quickly texted each other to try to get together at the mall, which is closer to where they live than to us. When Kimi came to us asking if we could drive her out there tomorrow (which is now today) we asked how everyone was going to get to the mall w… Continue

"Mama's Boy"

My son is a sweet & sensitive boy. As he quickly approaches the age of 12, his height, his looks, everything tells me that it is just a matter of time before he begins the serious change into adulthood. Yet his soft cheeks & huge brown eyes are just as they have always been since he was my little nursling.

When he was little, before we ever thought of homeschooling, let alone unschooling, I worried for him. He trusts absolutely, & never treated other kids in a rough or dominant mann… Continue

Loves to Read

We just got back from the extended part of our L&L vacation. My kids take swordfighting/adventure classes at a place called Guard Up, in a neighboring town. The kids are friends with the other kids in the classes (they all went to the residential summer camp together this year), so they really look forward to their time at Guard Up. Today after the class, one of Kim's friends (who goes to public school) was going to have another class later in the afternoon & invited Kim to attend (as a… Continue
