Dandarius Intro

We "Dandarius" are Daniel & Darlene Cavallaro - shared first name instead of last name. We do not like to call ourselves "parents" nor the young boys we are stewarding our "sons" - we prefer to call them our "employers" and call ourselves child stewards...it feels good to reshape and restructure our world in this way and it really helps to break away from the patterns associated with terms that we use.
Jade & Jaron have been unschooled since birth - in the beginning when academia was a consideration we worked with the Oak Meadow Waldorf curriculum and still use aspects of it now. We became aware of the "unschooling" term and model a few years ago and were elated that we had just been organically implementing child led learning. We joined this forum hoping to connect with people who may be compatible with our family and cultivate some relations so that Jade & Jaron can meet and learn about other children who are being raised with "enough structure to stand and enough freedom to grow."

Great Unschooling Article

Posted on April 10, 2009 at 3:00am 2 Comments

We just attached a document to our introduction in the forum and thought we should announce it in a blog post

It is a well written and inspiring unschooling article that was in the Sacramento Bee awhile back. It was the original article that enabled us to actually identify what we had been organically doing with Jade & Jaron's homeschool education.... Child… Continue

Thanks so much for the friend request and for also offering to host us! That's really sweet of you! :-) I'll let you know if your area ends up on our list of narrowed down locations...it's looking promising just by what you've shared!

Thanks, again!

Lots of love to you,

Hey - my inlaws are unschooling in Nevada City and have a terrible time finding others who aren't steeped in the charter school lifestyle, even though she is the HSC county contact! Kids are a bit older, though - 12 through 15.

They aren't computer oriented, so I don't see them being on RUN any time soon.

I read your post on Dealing with Family and we also had to divorce ourselves from both sets of family. It's good to hear that others have done it too....sometimes we question whether it was a good choice, but then we hear others talk about their problems and we acknowledge that we did do the right thing. Neither families were supportive of our life style of homeschooling, homebirth, breastfeeding, co sleeping, etc... we got such criticism and judgement every time we saw them, that it was such a stressor in our life. We finally read a book that helped us make the decision to divorce our family and we haven't looked back. The kids are no longer on edge and getting the third degree about 'what did you learn today' speech. We were also the first ones in the family to be different and sometimes you have to pay the price for being that way. Being a 'maverick' as you called it, was perfect.
We got tired of it all and get togethers got worse and worse. We now live our lives the way we always wanted and dreamed of doing and our kids are happy and healthy. We think we made the best decision for their health and happiness as our lives have become less stressful with this decision. Now we consider our closest friends our family. Family is who loves you and accepts you for who you are even if you are different.
It's just great to know there are others out that have done the same thing!!! And who feel the same way...happy and peaceful at last!
