what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
as of this moment.... I find it to mean that you do not separate learning from living in an artificial way as is done in schools.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
homeschooling for a year, unschooling..... still in the process of getting started.
names and ages of children
Ashley is 16, Ian is 11, Adam is 10
a little about me
I am 33. In addition to my 3 kids I live with my significant other, Alan. Our 4 dogs, 5 cats, and a black bear hamster.
I am a whim of the week kind of person. I get a wild hair and off I go to find out as much as I can about it....not for any particular reason, and to no particular end. If I get to do that...why shouldn't my kids?

that's why I'm here.

Equally unequal

I used to be an "it needs to be fair" parent. No one person in the family should have to do dirtier work than anyone else, if one child gets a video game...so should all the others. I did it more and more as they got older....because I wanted to avoid the ever increasing cries of "That's not fair!" At one point I began making them pay me a dollar every time the words were said. Then had to amend the rule to also include other possible versions of the complaint...such as "That's Jacked up!", "Tha… Continue

Back from Pismo Beach.... darn. (caution...guts)

Well, we returned from our annual trip to Pismo on Friday. We left pleasantly warm but foggy conditions to return to 105 degrees in the armpit of California. It took a couple of days to re-acclimate to home but I am finally getting around to posting some pictures...

We arrived just in time to set up camp and watch the sunset...

A poem to share.

I wrote this a few years ago and find myself thinking about it a lot as I learn more about unschooling and practice letting go. I thought I would share it here.

My Path

My path is lit by moonglow
My pace is mine to keep
My fields are sown with secrets
They're mine alone to reap
We'll share a loaf of bread my friend
when next we merry meet
But do not tempt yourself to tread
the trail beneath my feet

My place is where I find myself
My shadow, where I sleep
My skies are brilliant when I laugh
an… Continue

Ooooooohhh....myspace for unschoolers!

Sorry, I couldn't resist the comparison. I am a myspace junkie myself. My friends and family all use myspace. None of us even check our email anymore because we all just message each other. My brother pointed out a few months ago that email is for old people (yeah). I don't know if I'd go that far...but ,at least in our group, it's not far off.
I am glad to have found a familiar format to explore opinions and experiences as I try to evolve into unschooling. There seems to be a lot of inner work… Continue

Danielle---so cool to have found you! I'm just a ways up in the pittiest part of the armpit of California ;) Actually, we're just a few miles from the center of the state, so I usually call it the belly button of CA. I, too, am a "whim of the moment" kind of gal and just wanted to say HI!!

Bakersfield!! (said with the proper Oildale twang, a scratch and a spit ::bg::) What memories... I spent many years adjusting to "life outside of South Dakota" there, many years ago. I almost miss it. Not the haze and not the rednecks, though ;)
I just had to say hi & ask "How is life in the armpit??" ;D
