Hi everyone, I just thought I'd post in here about the blog ring I've just set up for unschoolers in the UK. The home page for the blog ring is here: http://ukunschoolers.blogspot.com/ I only set it up last night and there are 10 members already! ...

Were there many there? I would have loved to go, but finances are just too tight at the moment with the move to Scotland and everything. I hope they do one next year, too. :)

Profile Information

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
Absolute freedom for my son to be himself, and to express himself. This also benefits me, as I can learn to undo the damage done by my upbringing and truly be myself and express myself also.

It means R has autonomy and is treated with respect.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
Since R was born in 2006
names and ages of children
R, aged 3
a little about me
'They always said that you knew best
But this little bird's fallen out of that nest now
I've got a feeling it might have been blessed
So I've just got to put these wings to test."

Sick of the TV

We have no limits on TV use in this house, and usually R only wants it on for a little while in the mornings, and maybe again while we're having dinner or something.

Today we have a day where we're not going anywhere, just chilling around the house, and for some reason R has wanted the telly on all day. I don't mind - it's up to him, and I'm not going to say 'No', but I just have to vent somewhere because the constant sound of it in the background is doing my head in!

It's kids TV, or his vide… Continue

So exciting...

...things are changing in ways I find hard to explain or describe, but all for the positive. I'm learning every day to trust my child and to give him choices in everything he does, and it's such a great lesson for me and so exciting to watch him making those choices, and proving over and over that he is (of course) trustworthy to know what he wants, and what he needs. I can tell he really appreciates being given that trust and those choices, and he doesn't just come out with whatever comes first… Continue

'Nap-Time' Update

I posted before one day because I was angry with myself for shouting "Go to sleep!" at my son when he wouldn't go to sleep at what used to be 'Nap-time'. Sandra suggested we stop scheduled nap-times, and just let him sleep when he is sleepy. I loved this suggestion (and it seemed so obvious!) and I tried it out, but at first it didn't seem to work very well and we both ended up exhausted as no-one was getting enough rest.

Well, I stuck with it, because it's such a simple and natural solution -… Continue

Torches

Yesterday, my 2 year old took apart a torch, batteries and all, and put it all back together again and switched it on. We've never shown him how to do that, and no-one helped him - he just worked it out. Autonomous education in action!

I very nearly started speaking to him about what he was doing - "Ooh that's clever! And where does this bit go?" and stuff like that all coming into my head, but I remembered all the things I've been reading about unschooling, and leaving them alone and not getti… Continue
