what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
Living as a family pursuing our passions and interests fully as though school doesn't exist. Respect. Learning together as we go, supporting one another fully in our endeavors.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
Birth. We first said we were going to 'homeschool' when our oldest was born ('03). Then unschooling was so comfortable with our family as we went along and tied into attachment parenting. We have never looked back!
first names of children
A - '03

This works better for me than FB, if that's okay.

I have always been anti-label, but I'm appreciating that it can help me figure out what is going on with my child and therefore be able to support them the way they need. I am SO glad that my kids aren't in school (I mean, I always have been but now I appreciate just how much worse it would have been for them than we even knew). When I first figured out that Asperger's could explain a whole lot of struggles they have, it was hard not to let that label dominate my thinking. But after talking with some supportive people I'm finding myself losing that now and going back to seeing my kids for who they are rather than what label they might have. I'm grateful for the people here who have helped me find my way. Your comment was very kind and supportive!

I have a blog where I write about our adventures. It's at http://freelearners.wordpress.com

Hi Denise. Haven't written. Our son Emile went back to school a few weeks ago. Just in time for winter break, smart kid! Thanks again for this group.

Thank you! I didn't realize you were on here, this is great. Too bad you're not in Yorkshire! Lots of alternative schooling going on in the UK but not much right here that I've found so far. Anyway, just sort of slowly taking my life back bit by bit, this was a big step :)

Well, I'll say it is!
How many other madison folks are here?

Thanks for saying hi. I imagine I will re-meet many
of the mamas that I knew via attachment parenting and
the Madison Birth Center. or not. It will be great to
meet new people too, of course. thank you again.

Hi Denise- I wanted to let you know of an event that is taking place out at Folklore Village in Dodgeville. They have Saturday Night Socials and on May 15 they will be doing a Maypole dance. I plan on going and am inviting other homeschoolers.. I thought it might be a good time to meet you and your family if you are up for going. check there website for more details. folklorevillage.org - It is a potluck and they charge a fee as well but the socials are loads of fun. Oh and I recently became a member of HOME and I think I found your name on the directory. Do you go to any of there chats?

What a small world. We moved up to WI from Wheaton.
That must be really hard to avoid getting sick. We have been sick since christmas. first the stomach flu and then a bad cold. My youngest still has the cold lingering. We will make sure we are free and clear of anything before we meet up. this tuesday doesn't work for us anyways. We have plans with a friend in town here.

We have been to that place in Barneveld. The kids dig it. i am not so sure it is worth the $. Maybe if i was a guest of the hotel it would seem more worth it. Oh and the last time we went they had changed the rules and didn't allow more that one person down the slide at a time. And it was a bummer for my son who did not feel comfortable alone. And the other thing is they only have the slides open from Friday- Sunday. A bit silly for a waterpark. But I may be up for going. it would be somewhere to meet.

Well let's keep in touch. We run in to Madison frequently and to willy street coop. so we can always coincide something with that.
Bye for now- Renea

That is so great to learn about the Conference in IL. It sounds great. And ironically it is located a suburb away from where I moved up here from about 7 years ago. And my inlaws are still there. Which could be a big bonus for that event. I used to go to the resort it is being held at when I was growing up, for my mothers summer work picnics. I may skip the Madison one and just go for that one.

We should think of a good place to meet to beat the winter blues. I've been wanting to take the kids to Madtown twisters.Do you guys like to go there? they have an open gym for 6 and under Monday - Friday. that may be a regular event for you folks. Let me know what you think. or any other cool ideas.

Renea
