Profile Information

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
We live in England UK and we have two daughters: 5 yr old and 10 months. We do not plan to follow a curriculum but to follow our daughters interests and passions as we go. From this perspective I believe learning is a continuation of a child's natural curiosity and genuine desire to find out about the world. This is an extension of our general approach to parenting where we are child led: we have practiced sleep sharing, extended breastfeeding and baby led weaning etc We do not follow schedules but are led by our daughters rhythms and needs. We believe that a radical unschooling approach to learning is a continuation of this approach to parenting.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
I have been interested in the unschooling approach since having my first daughter 5 years ago. This prompted me to think about the type of education I would like for my daughter and not wanted to send her to pre-school at 3 years and school at 4 years. I started to look into other options available and came across the books by John Holt. We have joined the UK Home Education Group: Education Otherwise
first names of children
Lily 5yrs and Rosa 10 months
a little about me
Before the birth of my daughter I worked as a Clinical Psychologist with Children and Families. From my observations of children in school and in nurseries and also from my own research I feel that an unschooling or natural approach to learning is the optimal type of learning. I am married and my husband is a University Lecturer and we both share a passion rrfor child led parenting and child learning.

Hi Emma - I've just logged your friend request (I am a little slow with technology...). My daughters are 3.5 and 11 months, so not quite the same stage as yours... and we are rather far away... but it would be lovely to have some dialogue with other unschoolers. I'm feeling a little wobbly at the moment because EVERYONE seems to be asking us 'which' school Rose is going to (they go the term they are 3.5 here!!!). I'm looking to create a network of support locally and across the ether so that Rose and I can ride this year ahead when lots of people we know suddenly become unavailable during weekdays. From the forum it looks like there are lots of you in Cornwall - so far I'm feeling a little out on a limb here, although we do know some homeschoolers. How did you find the year when children Lily's age went off to school?

Hi Emma, Thanks for your friend request! Im in St Austell-so not too far in the grand scheme of things. Im so pleased to find an unschooling family nearby, I have a few friends with young children who dont go to school locally but none with the radical approach to bedtime,tv, sugar etc-which is all very new for me I must admit! I have read a lot of Steiner type books so Im a bit scared of Tv, and our oldest is immersed in back to back chuggington at the moment which goes against all my former beliefs. Thi is a bit of a challenge for me but Im hoping by lots of reading and networking will help.  Do you have any concerns about these things or have you been doing it long enough to trust and feel comfortable?

Hi Emma - I'm new here and reading up on what/who has been about in the last month or two - my eldest is probably about the same age as your daughter and our thinking tallies with yours above - where are you based? I'm really keen to create some local-ish links.
