what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
living, learning, experiencing life to the fullest way possible. The freedom to live each day the way we feel like living it, from exploring our outside world as well as our indoor world, and our unseen world.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
we decided to homeschool before we had kids, but then decided most whole heartedly when we watched our first born explore her world and learn. We knew school would not work for her since she always had many projects going at the same time, trying to figure out how things came apart and what all they could do. Our second was even more of a mystery and did not speak much at all until she was almost 4. Her constant question was why and still is. This world baffles her and so do all the people in it and what they do. She convinced it more that unschooling was the only way to learn.

excitement in the neighborhood

My partner and I try to get some quality adult conversation at night before he goes to bed. So at 10:30 tuesday night, we decide that the best way to get this is to go sit on our raised deck by our waterfall next to the koi pond. Not more than 5 minutes had gone by and we had just gotten into a good conversation when several unmarked police cars came flying by on our street. We live right on the corner of a horseshoe and the cops kept flying around this street. Now we are wondering what is going… Continue

sounds to me like we should make a point to stay in touch!
i love having online friends to chat with, and really sometimes feel closer to those than people i spend time with in person!
i guess without face to face interaction, all barriers are not needed and real truth and connection prevail!
anyway, i had the indigo child book because of my first daughter, but somehow throughout all our wandering around from place to place, i can't find it anymore. she was born with a very powerful intuition, or whatever you want to call it, but at times when she was very young, she seemed almost prophetic, sadly, she is not very connected to that part of herself anymore, i think because of some very difficult times and just a general non acceptance vibe from most people. i know that it runs strong in my blood and also my husband, so she came by it naturally, but i too, have not been in touch with that part of myself, and am just being awakened again. i really feel like i have been not here for many years, and am just returning, if that makes sense at all. when i was very sick a couple years ago, a shaman woman who my husband met while installing her internet connection invited us over to do a healing/reading thing and told me that i had strong intuitive/psychic abilities, and that it is what makes me sick. she suggested i wear an abalone on a chain around my belly at all times to protect myself from the negative energies of others because i am so sensitive. it was an incredible experience, and i would love to see her again. it must be really awesome to have a friend with those abilities. i just wish i knew the magic formula for really developing those things within myself. i also had a palm reading done recently and she said many of the same things. that i have strong intuitive/psychic ability and that i would be working with children in a creative field, but also helping them somehow. not sure exactly how it will all come together, but it is really starting to narrow into focus in some amazing and exciting ways. there are all these seemingly unrelated passions of mine that seem to be focusing in together into what i imagine will wind up as my calling in life. yoga, photography, creativity, unschooling, and kids! i can't wait to see how it all works out!
i'd love to keep in touch, feel free to email me anytime at dandelion.girls@hotmail.com
i'm also on flickr facebook and myspace.

WOW! We have way more in common than just unschooling!

We also 'just knew' we would 'homeschool' before our first one ever got here. Like she told US what the plans were! She had a VERY strong opinion even before she was born!

We did the whole natural way of things, natural birth, bradley method, natural parenting, co-sleeping, attachment parenting, baby wearing, nursing on demand, extended nursing, respectful parenting. It was all quite wonderful really. We were being true to what we knew internally.
Unschooling was a very natural progression from there. Anything that got too 'teachy' very early on was quickly rejected and caused problems, so I learned to just sit back and observe all the real learning that was taking place, and that any 'teaching' i would try to do would just get in the way. We never did curriculum or lesson plans or anything of that nature, but even something as simple as me trying to explain, fix, show the right way, kind of stuff, was not lovingly appreciated by my very independent and strong willed daughter! So because I had learned to respect her individuality as an infant, it wasn't hard for me to back off!

Then somehow along the way, we got lost. We had a few little detours that we never intended to take, but have gotten back to the root of ourselves and have learned from those experiences, and just reaffirmed ourselves so that we are more solid with who we truly are meant to be now.

I also totally disagree with the 'drugging' of children for the convenience of our institutionalized school system.
I also love/need creative endeavors of all kinds! It keeps me grounded and sane, like I'm meditating when I'm making something! And then at the end, you have this adorable finished product that you can be proud of and give to someone to enjoy or play with or whatever. I am teaching myself to sew. My mom is an amazing seamstress, but I never learned as a kid. I love to sew things by hand, am learning some new stitches, and embroidery, and just learned to knit at our unschoolers park day on Wednesday! Hopefully I will remember how to crochet soon, or have someone refresh my memory! I used to do all kinds of stuff.
I also love to paint, and draw, I like to do murals, almost always kid stuff. I am still a kid at heart, and get so much pleasure from creating beautiful environments for kids.
I also love to take pictures. I'd like to say photography, but I don't have any technical knowledge of what I'm doing yet, so that sounds too formal for my skill level! lol!
I just learned yesterday how to use the manual settings on my simple little point and shoot camera. That is gonna take some practicing! I love taking pics of my kids, and my sisters kids, and nature stuff.
I'm totally a nature lover, and your little garden oasis sounds like such a nice place to go hide away! I adore asian inspired garden elements, like ponds, and koi, and bamboo! I totally believe in faeries, and recently had a palm reader/medium tell me that I had psychic ability and that I would do some work with it in the future. She also told me I had 3 very strong angels present that were with me all the time. I don't know much about that, but I really want to find out more. Maybe you could direct me to a good starting point?

Thanks for your great comments! It's amazing what having a glimpse into the world of hospital birthing will do, eh? Like you had your mom's examples as an L&D nurse, I was a doula before I was a mom, and there was no way I was stepping foot into one of those places after having had experience there! We are so looking forward to our next unassisted birth. It's always a delight to me to hear from other UCers who have had such positive experiences. As you experienced, our last two births, the least-interferred-with, were also only a few hours and super-easy! Well, enough about birthing. . .onto other wonderful things! :D

Hello Beautiful Lady!
I just wanted to say Hi. I wanted to write sooner (after you left a message having read my FP comments). I must have sounded confusing, but I tried to explain how Unschooling looked in our house! I trust all is well with you & yours!

Rawsome New Year - Faery Child/Mother Being/ Wifey Wonder,

Thanks so magically much for your lovely and most conscious note.

I look forward to reading some of your happy heart of a husband's writing and what you said: "I feel like you are in my husband's writing" makes me smile a mile ...

Be sure and check out my www.SupernaturalWoman.com journal entry and today' " All My Birthday Wishes Come True" entry should be up in a day or two, depending on my webguy.

I may just hire my lovely Persian Lady, next door, to give me a professional healing massage, this eve. A belated gift to me.

I am looking at a way to be paid only to write and spread my wings with wonder. I may put up feedburner and my sites and go from there. Any ideas ...

Must be total conscious congruence. Too much effort to swim upstream, anymore. Besides, after the poor salmon do this, they spawn and die. I am still alive and kick'n!

Sending you and your lovely family all the Luscious Love you know and are.

Supernaturally,

Katherine

Thank you for such a warm welcome, what a great way thing to wake up to! We had a late night of silliness and Rock Band 2 last night, so morning here came just after noon. :)

Yes, Dakotah will be 12 in March and it amazes me how quickly he is growing. His feet have outgrown mine now, and I'm sure his height will soon follow, although he's still got an inch or two before he overtakes me in that department. My 9 year old, Tristyn, is always wanting to catch up with his brother. I keep telling him someday... ;)

I can only imagine what having a baby in the house again would be like. It makes me smile just to think of it!

Has your daughter considered selling her creations on Etsy.com? It's a very cool site filled with handmade goodies. If you haven't checked it out, do! It might be just the place for a budding entrepreneur. Someday I'd like to have a few things of my own on there, although I can never nail down exactly what those things will be. Likely they will be tribal bellydance related....gypsy skirts, hip adornments, sparkly bindis and the like, is my guess! My trouble is inspiration hits, and then hits again somewhere else..... My house is filled with many a happy and half finished craft! lol

Thanks again for the welcome, I'm so happy to have found this site! If you ever do get around to visiting Washington, you've got a friend an hour north of Seattle. :)

Namaste'

Happy Birthday to ME!

What a wonderful way to begin my special 49th birthday. After a lovely time with my 12 year young homelearner, watching Shrek 2, I am blessed to read your supportive words and be your friend!

Thanks for sharing what you feel and you have inspired me to get my full story out there.

Cant' wait to hear yours ...

I had best go to bed, since MCFD and I shall be speaking, on my special day. Delight!

Interesting how the 'opposing forces' strive to erase the magic we create. Never.

Supernaturally,

Katherine
