OMG, don't ever ask the school board or school district for information about home-ed! That almost invariably gets you the worst, most biased information possible. They don't want you to homeschool - they lose money! Find out what you need to do from other area homeschoolers, including the loop holes and how little is actually required by law.

I did a quick and dirty search and found a simple breakdown of FL laws here:

http://www.homeschooling-paradise.com/florida-homeschool.html

The good news is that Florida allows an "umbrella school" option, and that's generally your best bet. An "umbrella school" is technically a kind of private school - and as such makes you exempt from homeschooling legislation. Some sell curricula and whatnot, but others essentially act as an intermediary between you and the state.

Ask other unschoolers which umbrella schools are "unschooling friendly" - some require you to do very very little, no tests, no portfolio, and they don't check up on you.

Unschooling, rather paradoxically perhaps, is considered a type of home-education. So you register as a homeschooler. The best advice to keep in mind is to Know Your Local Laws - you can look up the laws on the internet but it doesn't hurt to check with area home/unschoolers for details of how that all plays out. There's a group here for Florida unschoolers, and links to several more here.
