Just quickly, I have experience with depression at varying intensities. I recently started seeing a GP (doc.) who encompasses both allopathic and nutritional therapies. She tested me for PYROLURIA and it came back positive. Apparently, about 10% o...

I just got over a migraine that lasted 11 days. I slept through most of it (natural guard against pain). Pain meds did not touch it. Everything smelled terrible, was too loud and my visual imbalance made me dizzy and nauseous. I found an allergy m...

Jennifer, does your husband's counseling component include marriage and family counseling as well? It sounds like you need help too. The pattern you are talking about, video games, tv, etc. sounds like avoidance. Sometimes if he can just get up an...

You have to be very careful when seeking out counseling. I have worked in the Mental Health/Substance Abuse field for over 15 years and I can tell you, you need to use caution. I recommend Love & Logic as a parenting modality. or I have some disco...

I came back hoping I was within the 15 minutes to edit point. I missed it. Anyhow, I was thinking about counseling and that maybe you should see a counselor. Not a family counselor, but a personal counselor. You sound exhausted and frazzled and d...

What are you hoping counseling will offer you? What is the thing you think that counseling will give you? Will it help you to know how to solve Aiden? Will it help Aiden to see how he is too mean to his sister? Will it improve your life and his? R...

Hi Jennifer,
I to am always glad to connect with other RU families even if it is online. I am happy for you that you will be able to move back to Illinois, as it seems to be the place you feel the happiest. I can tell by your page how much you miss it :) In the mean time if you do need any virtual support I'm always up for a chat. I wish a smooth move for you!

Hi Jennifer,
I Don't think we've met, I wanted to introduce myself. I also live in Arizona and am looking to meet more unschoolers in town (or at least close to my town, tempe). My daughter, Olivia, is close in age with your boys she turns 3 in September. We are out and about a lot, let me know if you would ever like to meet up with us.

Profile Information

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
Well unschooling means child-led learning, following their interests and facilitating learning rather than actively teaching. To me, radical unschooling is an extension of that into all aspects of life - trusting kids to regulate their own bodily needs, such as food and sleep - and trusting them to be(come) full human beings in their own time, with gentle guidance from adults. It also means that I am constantly learning!
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
My kids are 5 and 3 and I guess we've been pretty much unschooling since the beginning. We practice attachment parenting - cosleeping, extended breastfeeding, gentle "discipline", etc.
names and ages of children
Aidan, 5
Moira, 3
a little about me
I like to crochet and read for fun. I struggle with issues of discipline because I don't want to use punishment and rewards, but I don't get a lot of support for that. My kids are quite spirited and can be challenging, but are also curious, smart, and wonderfully full of life.
