An Unschooling Life

My Daughter, The Writer

“We worry about what a child will become tomorrow, yet we forget that child is someone today.” - Stacia Tauscher **originally posted in 2006 ** We were hanging out with our homeschooling friends one afternoon and my daughter Jacqueline was sitting on one of the picnic tables, finishing a story (Princess Barbie) she had started [...]

Origami

** originally posted in 2007 ** We picked this origami book up at the library, dug out a pack of paper that we bought on clearance and Billy sat down with the girls to try it out. None of them had ever done it before so they chose an easy one to start with, which [...]

Learning All The Time

This highly opinionated former teacher and original thinker spent the last half of his life challenging widely accepted classroom practices. The author of 10 books that concentrate on early child development and education, Holt is widely considered the father of the modern-day homeschooling movement because he grew to believe that schools stifle the learning process. [...]

Valerie Fitzenreiter And Laurie Chancey Interview

Valerie Fitzenreiter is the author of The Unprocessed Child: Living Without School, a book about that she describes as “…how we raised our daughter, Laurie, with attachment parenting and unschooling methods. I discuss issues that concern parents who are considering unschooling their children and offer advice on living a peaceful coexistence with children”. She and her [...]

*Originally posted 2007* Kids Take School Into Their Own Hands: Some Home-School Families Are Opting for a New Approach to Curriculum; Unschooling BY Claire Scheumann From stock whips to ballet, Dungeons and Dragons to NASA, some Berkeley students say they are studying subjects they would not have access to in a traditional setting by pursuing a new kind of [...]

Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves

Every parent would happily give up ever scolding, punishing or threatening if she only knew how to ensure that her toddler/child/teen would thrive and act responsibly without such painful measures. Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves by Naomi Aldort is the answer to this universal wish. It is not about gentle ways to control a child, [...]

Real Learning

Originally posted in 2006 My daughter Jacqueline (age 7) is self taught on the subject of space/the universe. She’s interested in learning about the universe, because she’s interested in the universe, and that interest has taken her in many directions. I’ve been re-reading Guerrilla Learning by Grace Llewellyn and I wanted to share this: “Real learning requires meaning. [...]

Everyday Blessings – The Inner Work of Mindful Parenting

This is my all time favorite parenting book and it completely changed the way I view parenting when I read it several years ago. Myla & Jon Kabat-Zinn are parents to three grown children. Jon is the founder and director of the Stress Reduction Clinic and is the author of Wherever You Go, There You [...]

Anne Ohman: Making Connections

I’ve been reading Anne’s writings and have been a member of her unschooling group for a several years now. This excerpt from her Making Connections unschooling conference talk is one of my favorites. Some of you have probably read it, but for those new to unschooling or homeschooling, it may be just what you need. [...]

Rewarding (Bribing) Children To Learn

**originally posted at my blog**

I'm not a fan of bribing children to learn. Even before I removed my children from school, I hated the message that rewarding them with pizza parties, candy and money (yes, money), was sending to them. These "rewards" were held out in front the students like a dangling carrot, with the promise that it could be theirs if they learned what the school wanted them to learn.

The message? I believe it's two-fold.

1: If someone had to bribe me to do something, my fir… Continue

Unschooling Encouragement

**originally posted at my blog**

A while back, a member posted to one of the unschooling e-mail lists with some questions for unschooling parents, and she was looking for encouragement. Her questions are followed by my answers.

I have several questions that I hope someone (many people - I would love to hear lots of opinions) would be willing to answer for me.

1- How old were your children when you took them out of school?

I have three kids that I removed in 2004. They were in t… Continue

I moved my blog...FINALLY!!!

I finally got off my butt and moved my blog to it's own server. It was kind of sad to let go of blogger but I had moved my adoption blog and it was time for the unschooling one to move also.

I've been out of touch for a while so I need some help in getting the new address out and I decided to have a contest for those who help me out.

You can read about it here:
Win A $20 Amazon.com Gift Certificate.

Thank you!!!!

a little about me
Hello - a lot of you already know me. I'm a native New Yorker (which means I have an incredibly thick skin), I recently moved to Florida (which means I hate the cold), I'm an Aquarius (which means I am independent), I'm a Libertarian (which means I believe in personal liberty and freedom) and I love hard rock (which means my neighbors hate me).

I'm a vegetarian, have a big mouth and have been married since 1994.

I adopted all of my kids through foster care in 2003. Adoption through foster care is not for the faint of heart and I've been through things with my kids that I never thought possible. Radical unschooling was a natural progression for us in helping my daughters continue the healing process and they thrive in this lifestyle. On the flip side, my son struggles with physiological, emotional and mental issues that have at times torn our family apart.
