Linda hopefully is reading this on her own, I am in San Diego for a work conference right now. Speaking of San Diego we are very likely to attend Good Vibrations, probably 95% likely for Linda and Andrew and 75% likely for me, depending on my work schedule. Same odds for LiG.
Hope all is well, please say hi to Shane and Kota and Raven from all of us.
Best - Steve&Linda
As for work, some people work here and there are small businesses. I think many commute to Issaquah, Bellevue, or Seattle (all along 90). There are some nuts like us who have to commute to a town that isn't right off 90, but Kevin can work from home a few days a week so it works for us.
Thanks for the welcome!
\We're in outside of the city limits and close to both Snoqualmie and North Bend. They are right off I-90 so there are some truck stops and an outlet mall (great for kids clothes!) as well as normal things like grocery stores, a library, a small used book store, parks and a small city rec center with an indoor pool and a gym. There is even a train museum with lots of old trains and, of course, Snoqualmie falls which are very pretty. We are very near to a lot of hiking, lakes (small ones), rivers, and we even have an elk herd that apparently is getting to large.
Our address is Snoqualmie but it feels like North Bend. It's like a small town near some medium sized towns which are outside a large city. We can stay fairly close (~20 min drive) and get to almost all the shopping that we can't do in North Bend. There are also some small attractions within 20-30 minutes (small zoo, children's museum). Going to Seattle is a longer drive (close to an hour with parking and everything) but we go there for the zoo, science center and to visit people sometimes. I don't go there more than once a week, in general. I think being on the outskirts of a large metropolitan area is really nice.
For us, being near a major freeway (10 min drive) is very helpful. I know of a lot of people who have to drive on small backroads and highways to get to work. The traffic is awful. The roads just weren't designed for that many people and the commute is terrible. Since my husband has to drive in to Kirkland a few days a week that would be difficult for us.
There is one thing that is a little odd in the area and that is that there is a new enormous housing development that in Snoqualmie. We don't live anywhere near it, but a lot of people do and it is so different than the rest of the area that there is some cultural friction, I guess you could say. I don't understand moving out to the middle of nowhere and having a yard the size of a postage stamp and no privacy, but some people seem to like the planned community. It doesn't really bother me as I don't live there, but I've never lived in a small town before so maybe it gives the town a very different feel now. It probably does pull me towards identifying myself with North Bend :)
Very long winded answer, but somewhat helpful, I hope. Can you tell that I think it would be great if more radical unschoolers lived out here (bwg)
(yes, I did just post this message on my wall instead of yours. gargh!)
