Profile Information

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
Knowing that everything is fine right now, so there's no need to apply force to make it right.

Also, see link 2 below. :-)
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
3 years
names and ages of children
Dmitri, 3
November baby on the way
a little about me
I love blueberries. I broke a string on Dmitri's ukele by trying to tune it an octave higher than it was supposed to be. A good mystery novel is one of my favorite escapes.

Subjects Unfolding

We did Social Studies without meaning to.

Dmitri (3) was playing with his cash register and fake money. He asked me about the guys on the money, and I explained they were presidents. We talked about the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, and Abraham Lincoln. During the conversation, it came out that Joe refers to the guys on the money as "clowns." I figured it wasn't the right time pursue the subtlety of *that* line of thought quite yet.

We live in a white house, too, but ours is smaller. :-)

I changed my username...

...because my page here came up while I was being Googled at a birthday party. Silly me. I used my full name but didn't know the site was fully searchable to anyone. I thought I was only visible to members here. Suddenly, all my radical thoughts were visible to people who already thought I was weird.

I changed it as a protective measure--didn't want just anyone who typed my name into a search engine to be able to access the furthest reaches of my psyche, some possibly intimate details of our fa… Continue

The Evolution of Self-Awareness

Something interesting has been happening with Dmitri (3) lately. He's talking more about how he feels and seems to be noticing more.

He's just started to say that he's tired. Over the past couple of days, he's added something new: "I look tired." It's interesting to me that he's observing himself from outside himself.

24 Unschooled Hours

Here's our family's contribution to the "Normal" Days Blog Carnival. I was inspired to start documenting a typical day at 9:29pm, so we're going to span two days. Welcome to August 1-2, 2008, in the lives of the Boerst-Italiano family with a special focus on 3yo Dmitri. That odd protrusion on me is Dmitri's sibling. He claims she's a girl named Susanna.

Ourselves

"I want to do it mine self," is a common refrain heard around here.

Today we were playing with fire--lighting a candle, singing Happy Birthday, and blowing it out. Dmitri (3) was focusing on the lighting the match part. He told me, "I want to do it mine self!" He tried several times with some success and then changed his mind.

"I want to do it ourselves!" So we started striking the match together again. Neat new word use and incredibly sweet moment. :-)

Hi Julie. We are stopping in Ithaca for two days on the way to the SHINE conference. Do you want to get together and do something? Whatever you're comfortable with - just chat, give an IC tour, or come hike some waterfalls with us.

lol at least the only thing I'm "building" is a hedge row but it's 50m long and the site is just a field so we're turfing and trenching - very heavy work. Still it could be worse, I could be building a house ;-) I hope you keep your sanity and it all comes together for you all.

Wonderful news about Suzanna's birth. As to moving, why do we do this to ourselves? :-)

Hi Julie - looks like you've been too busy with the baby to be back here. When was s/he born? I had a boy on 23 Sep (was due 6 Oct) And we moved to Ireland (from London) when he was just over 2 months. I'm just on to update things and saw your message to me.

Julie, I came across your page and had to drop a note. We have so many interests in common. I lived in Dryden growing up; I noticed the cosleeping items in your sidebar; and you're participating in an IC (though we're just researching and disappointed we can't do it without moving).

Liam's (my friends little guy) fave snack. the crust is what is brown and cheese that is browned is the best part. :) Micah learned about the baby on the way around Christmas so he connected the two in his mind and was sure that baby Jesus was a girl...i have to admit at being a little pleased at his feminist leanings. :)

Hi Julie,
Thanks. Yes the store is amazing! And it will also be amazing when it becomes a member owned cooperative next month and I am no longer involved with everything. It has been an amazing project and I can't imagine how we - the children and I - did it. In the beginning they were super involved but no longer.
Anyhow, we will see what adventures are next.
Gillian
