"Can I do it one way with my nieces and another with my kids without causing conflict?   Probably not. Unschoolers live a pretty glamorous life by standards of school kids - they get to stay up as late as they want, eat whatever whenever they…"

Joyce Fetteroll replied to Kaed Family's discussion can this be done?
"I doubt you can have two standards while both sets of kids are with each other. That will cause strife.   If you can get your kids involved in deciding how to make happen what their cousins need, that's might work. They're a bit young…"

My nieces ages 6 and 9yr.  just moved in with us due to neglect and sexual abuse.  They are foster kids in our home which comes with a set of rules. We will get monthly home inspections to see that they are followed. My kids ages 3yr.boy and 6yr. girl have always either slept with each other or with us but social services is against that.   We had to set up separate beds in separate rooms for them.  My hubby is laying with my 3 yr. old right now in the boy room and my daughter laid quietly…See More

"Well actually he doesn't get into his sisters hair clips anymore because a few weeks ago he watched my hubby use an electric razor to shave his head.  He was fascinated.  My hubby asked if he wanted a turn and then he stood big and…"

"we still have a bit of summer - does he enjoy a run through the sprinklers with you or with friends?  Would your child enjoy a trip to the hair salon for a special wash and trim?  Maybe you go and do it and just have him watch and be very…"

Kaed Family replied to Andy Marshall's discussion the cost of unrestricting food
"It seems that the sweet shops  or sweets displays in stores are your problem.  If you spot it up ahead or know its up ahead walk down a different aisle or on the other side of the street and direct their attention to the interesting…"

Kaed Family replied to coconuts's discussion how much do your younger children (around 7) play with other kids?
"I have been babysitting my daughters best friends all summer.  She is six and her friends are sisters age 6 and 8yr.  I will continue to watch them for an hour a day after school during the school year.  They walk to my house after…"

"The trouble with any kind of day camp for children is that the focus tends to drift to being about teaching children - I don't mean teaching them something specific, but setting the scene of teachers and students. Have you read John…"

Competition vs. Cooperation

My 6 yr. old went to vacation bible day camp.  She loves big social events, enjoys the crafts, and they preach good ideas mostly.  Each day the children are to bring handfuls of coins to raise money for a charity.  The girls put their money in the pink bucket and the boys put their money in the blue bucket.  Then at the end of the night they see if boys or girls brought the most money.  It's done by weight of coins.  One pastor gets slimed if the girls win and the other gets slimed if the…See More

Just laying around, doing nothing

She was just laying on her back, rolling around on the floor, putting her feet on things.  Basically doing nothing.  I thought about suggesting something to do but then decided to let her be and relaxed on the couch with my book.  We had spent the morning watching a couple large trees getting cut down in the neighbors yard.  The kids were fascinated with the process.  She sits up and asks me if the earth turns a little faster when the large tree trunks fall and shake the earth.  What an…See More

still deschooling myself

I'm still deschooling myself, still new to unschooling. My kids are 6yr. and 2yr and haven't been to school but I still get urges to homeschool my oldest.  Her kindergarten public school friends are doing addition and subtraction worksheets.  She was interested in trying a couple worksheets since we have workbooks around (hand me down homeschool stuff from a friend)  She occasionally likes to do stuff from the homeschool box. In the back of my mind I am thrilled when she works on traditional…
