Profile Information

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
To me, the paradigm of radical unschooling is a call to a life of authenticity, integrity, creativity, awe, intergenerational respect, and the flourishing of multiple intelligences.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
I am a recent college graduate and have never experiencing home- or unschooling. I am extremely interested in unschooling and democratic education and am considering entering the arena as practitioner.

a little about me
Though I always excelled in the mainstream schools that I attended as a child, school always felt like a spectacular waste of time for me. In addition to the largely uninspired content, I seemed to be perpetually troubled by the awareness that had I not been made to waste the better half of my waking hours in that jail cell, I could be creating and knowing myself so much more. I'm an aspiring psychotherapist hoping to ultimately work with children, adolescents, and adults to help them infuse greater creativity, awe, and authenticity into their lives. Since I believe mainstream, compulsory schooling to be a significant hindrance to the development of these inner resources, I am very interested in unschooling and models of alternative education such as democratic education as well as specific elements of Waldorf. I am interested in exploring how unschooling and democratic education might be implemented in lower income communities and in non-Western contexts colonized by Westerners.

“Leaders are not, as we are often led to think, people who go along with huge crowds following them. Leaders are people who go their own way without caring, or even looking to see, whether anyone is following them. "Leadership qualities" are not the qualities that enable people to attract followers, but those that enable them to do without them. They include, at the very least, courage, endurance, patience, humor, flexibility, resourcefulness, stubbornness, a keen sense of reality, and the ability to keep a cool and clear head, even when things are going badly. True leaders, in short, do not make people into followers, but into other leaders. "
