Hi Jennifer and all~ I'm apparently just getting the hang of how this system works, but I've found your discussion, whew! Thank you so much for starting it (I thought I was, but it turned out to be an email!). The article is also now posted on h...

Is there a part of you that agrees with your daughter when she behaves this way? OH! I find myself saying YES! A part of you that believes she needs something that isn't realistic in the moment in order to be happy? Ah, but that's the real issu...

Hi Niki, I, too, went through what you're going through, or at least my version of it. My girls are now 6 and 7. When we let go of our controls over the tv (when they were around 2 & 4) it was a bit of a deluge, but I'm here to tell you it really ...

Profile Information

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
Radical in the sense of complete and unschooling in the sense of learning rather than being taught. Whole life learning. Living. Trust. Trust that each of us is doing the our best all the time. When I read (or less frequently hear) the term radical unschooling, I think of people who are human beings "doing their own thing", but with each other (usually family members).
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
about 3 years.
names and ages of children
Cricket, 7
Lucy, 6
a little about me
I bake... these days I'm developing recipes that feature organic sprouted-wheat flour that I make myself. I'm dreaming of the day that I can develop a relationship with a wheat grower and miller here in Maine so I can get local grains for my baking. I lean towards nutrient-dense baked goods: brioche, cookies. muffins, biscuits, scones, brownies, gingerbread, apple cake...
We (me, Noah -dh, and the girls) live in Maine, more or less with my husband's parents. It is what it is.
We love our UU church in Augusta where I conduct the Hospitality Hour between services, Noah sings in the choir and greets, and the girls play and sing and get the only "formal" instruction in their lives at the moment.
I spent the first 32 years of my life in the western half of North Carolina before moving to Maine 10 years ago. I am blessed to have two RU families within 30 min. of here and the moms are both friends and inspirations. Lucky me!
In my youth through grad school (art ed, for crying out loud... great time in grad school, hated teaching) I was a high achiever, president of this and that. Now I'm living small (perhaps a bit too small) and trying to get at the heart of my heart. Byron Katie helps. A lot.
