I love cooking and so do my kids. Crispin loves assembling things with me: we pop baking dishes into the oven and then cuddle on the sofa--until the oven rings to signal food is done. Although often it smells done a minute prior to the "ding"! We...

We cycled to the park and enjoyed the Fall. I took pictures, while the guys pursued their interests gaming and art.

I like that idea. My 16 year old asked me if we could buy swiss chard recently at the grocery. I usually keep a mental tab on what we are spending and each kid puts stuff in until it seems that we have reached about the limit of our budget and the...

Our shopping experience has expanded. Martin made meringues from scratch using egg whites, fair trade sugar, cream of tartar, and vanilla. They were a beautiful creamy white. Delicious.

Lately, I have been wondering handing over our grocery money to my sons and letting them make the decisions. I have been experimenting with small portions of the budget and am really pleased how it is changing the experience for all of us. Normal...

Children do have a different style when they put meals together I noticed, too. Today I gave Martin fifty dollars. He came up with dried dates, mussles, chicken, corn, fennel/anise, tomatoes, watermelon, strawberries, halva, naan bread, and cheer...

I noticed something similar when Ray started cooking for the family. He likes to offer tasty, nutritious meals! He has a different "style" in the kitchen than either I or George, too, so its nice to have that variety in our diet.

My kids are interested in "junk food" and technology. We have a budget, because we have bills and we have things we need or we will find ourselves cold, homeless without electricity, without computers:) I think its okay to talk about income, afte...

When I want to plant a garden, I WANT information and guidance from someone who knows more than I. My years of experience as a human can help my children. Funny you should post that because my nine year old son has a rather large strawberry patch...

I checked out the blogs, and thanks I found it helpful. It is certainly clarifying what I think and understanding how I feel about our issues. I also feel judged by my neigbours and hemmed in. The old, "so what curriculum do you use?". I envision ...

Clarification already... "being directed on a path" CAN be harmful. I think the intent and attitude of the person offering guidance makes all the difference. Being directed on a path is different than being forced down a path though...

Profile Information

what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
It means living in an equal relationship with my children, meeting our needs, and using my experience as an adult to enrich our journey, instead of coercing the children. It is about living honestly, and joyfully with my family.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
I have been unschooling for two years, and tried prior to that to unschool. My children choose to try school and I felt as an unschooler that I was willing to help them meet their needs in that environment. We agreed it didn't work, although I was willing to advocate for them so they could attend on their own terms.
names and ages of children

a little about me
I am always trying to find answers and trying to find others who are able to trust their spouses and children, and live honestly. I am interested in urban gardens, knitting, communicating, democracy in the family and freedom. I am also interested in art, bicycles, reading and writing, finding happiness, as well as building community.

Normally, they hate grocery shopping, at least when I am dragging them along at my pace. I hate it too, because I have to keep explaining the purchases. However I noticed when they have twenty dollars in their pockets and are in charge of part of the "shop" t… Continue

living peacefully

I have been wondering about living peacefully lately. There are so many ways in which our society couches violence behind gentle facades that I wonder if I will be mired in it. Learning to recognize manipulation and coercion and to resist it or move away from sniping to live joyfully, and peacefully takes a lot of dedication.

I want to give my children the gift of a parent who is living fully and able to connect with them in a loving non-judgemental way and of course to face the world with cour… Continue
