what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
Letting go of control and allowing growth and expansion in not just the children but the family unit.
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
We homeschooled for three years.  This year we decided to go back to school because it looked like I was going to have to go back to work.  He's been in a montessori public school and enjoying his friends but really disliking the homework and testing.  He's been especially stressed out with the FCAT. I would regret sending him to school but I think it's really helped my partner, ex-husband and I realize we really want him to be 'schooled' at home.  It's been a long journey.  If I'm being very honest our homeschooling experience was rigid.   I hated it.  My son liked being home but he did not like the work I forced on him. I had met some unschooling families but after reading the forums and starting to read a lot of books, blogs etc, I realize the families I met were not doing what I see described here.  Sandra Dodd's pages have really put it in perspective. I made the excuses to put my son in school to stop the fighting; to relieve myself of the stressful duty of being my son's teacher.  I used a new baby, financial difficulty etc as excuses.  I see my sons demeanor changing, his eyes are all of a sudden guarded.  We are all committed to starting the unschooling. Excited.  Loving the idea of letting him run with his passions and being on hand to lovingly facilitate.  We have said to our son that it's his choice.  He is not trusting of us following through- what's more, I think he thinks it's too good to be true.  He wants to finish out the year and we are all in agreement of unschooling during summer vacation. Our hope is he will not want to return to school in September.  However, if he does, we will support him and use what we have learned from all we've read to help him in that journey.
