what does "radical unschooling" mean to you?
Somebody wrote on a list somewhere these four things...
Trust, help, inspire, connect. Great recipe for unschooling, I thought. (Anybody know who it was who came up with it?)
how long have you been unschooling or homeschooling?
Since my kids were 2 and 3. My then-parenting style was NOT working quite as well as I'd hoped, I ran into Pam Sorooshian and Sandra Dodd and others on the AOL homeschooling discussion boards and they just made so much sense that my previous ideas just couldn't hold up. And thus a bright and bouncy new unschooling family was born.

a little about me
I have to put it in this little box? Oops, look at all the space I just wasted. In my previous life (the one that didn't have kids in it) I worked in the TV biz (with dh.) Now I spend most of my time hanging out with my kids, keeping up with their latest likes and dislikes, coordinating their social lives and trying to keep schoolish thinking from creeping into our lives. On the side, I teach Spanish to other people's kids and English to Spanish-speaking hotel workers. I learned/still learn Spanish mostly by watching TV. This year I started slowly taking prerequisite classes for entry to nursing school, hoping to fund some travel dreams and give me something else worthwhile to do when the kids move on. I like to stay up watching tv or movies and sleep late. I like books that make me cry and people who make me laugh. I also like to garden but I forget to water so I don't actually grow very much. Look, the little box keeps getting bigger as I write...I'm on a roll, I'm discovering things about myself I never knew! I can write more! Okay, okay, no, I'm done for now. Someone else say something. Please.

Hi there Patty! Welcome aboard :-)
I laughed so hard when you mentioned your gardening. I too love to plant stuff and then forget to water. Such a waste!! -of course...when I DO remember to water, I then forget to weed...or mow...and so my house looks like a page out of a Jeff Foxworthy calendar LOL
We just started unschooling and are glad to have found an online community like this.

Patty~ I'm grateful at least my sisters don't try to give me parenting advice! But it would be nice to have a sister that "gets it." So that is why most of us congregate in places like this.

I guess you must live in S. Calif? It is cloudy and cool here today. Our green will soon fade to brown. All will be covered in blowing leaves. Then everything will be snow covered, icy, or muddy. What a site it will be.

I can't think of one funny thing to write! Thanks for the laughs. Have a sunny Cali day! Have you heard about the Calif. unschooling conf. next Sept? Good Vibrations is the name.

My boys are making me laugh now. Gotta go. ;)

Patty~ It was me (Heather)! I like reading new member profiles. I wanted to see if you were related to Jan Hunt (Natural Child Project). A long shot, but since you didn't mention it I assumed not. But I loved your writing. It made me laugh. I wish I cold be that funny!!

I try not to stay on-line too long, but I have been really glad for this site lately. It has helped me connect with others IRL and gives us more of a sense of community. And it helps me to be more gentle and strive to be the best I can for my boys and self. I'm always striving. Just never feel like I am done.

Best wishes!!
