My daughter turned 4 this month, and she has been nursing more often and being a bit of a homebody lately. We have gone out a couple of times this week to meet friends and to enjoy the nice weather, but each time she was ready to go home after onl...

a little about me
Me...I grew up just outside of New Orleans. I'm a top bar hive/sustainable bee guardian. I also square foot-ish garden and compost with & without worms and continue to learn and do more urban homesteading. I'd like to learn to hoop dance when I find time to practice.

Quinn...Her current interests are Care Bears, penguins (a la Pingu), kitty cats, (all of the stuffed variety), and drawing lots of circles.

Matthew...refurbishes BMX bikes.

Hey Rebecca! I wanted to make sure that if you're coming to our unschooling park day tomorrow, you knew it was going to be up at the beach in Fontainebleau State Park near Mandeville!! We'll be hooking up with the ranger about 1pm to see some eagle & owls nests & babies. Hope you can make it! ~d

Sounds great! Do you have a park suggestion? Can you meet up on a Thursday ever? I would come with just my 9 month old, Emlen in that event. She adores swings. I'll come prepared to not put too much weight on visiting, knowing that one of us might have to up and leave. It'll be nice to meet face to face though. I haven't gone to a conference yet and am not sure when it'll work out to go.
I'll get a pix of me up here soon so you know who to look for.

Yep, already joined FOTR. But we're actually wanting to buy an RV and mountain property, live in the RV while we slowly build our eco-sustainable dream house. And just travel with the RV part time. :)

Oooo, that's a bunch of goodness to check out! Thank you!! That bee stuff is amazing. I appreciate what you said about making the trip up here knowing that Quinn wouldn't want to interact. Pax likes to just be with his family as well. We could give it a shot some day with the willingness to call it quits quickly if things go south and then just keep up via on-line for the time being until they're older...? It's a paradox I think. Building community satisfies me, and yet I know my ds, ds, dh don't have the same need or at least not in the same way. I can come your way as well...although we're a lot of energy to bring. Let's strew. I heard about an event going on at Walker Ranch over Flagstaff Mtn on Sep 21st and Sep 28th where the ranch comes alive like in the old days. Homesteading style. I don't know much more, but I thought it sounded neat. My family might check it out on the 28th. (I'm hoping to camp this weekend.)
Thanks for the info on composting and bees. I know I have more ? but I have to think about them first.
:o)

Thanks for the bee guardian info - I'm in total research mode now!

I'm sorry to hear about your aunt and uncle in Effie - I'm glad that the people and animals are fine. There was a lot of damage in central Louisiana. I think the media figured that since New Orleans was relatively unscathed (compared to Katrina), everything must be okay. But we (not "we" personally, but "we" collectively) got hit fairly hard. Luckily, our house and our family's houses are okay - no tornado or wind damage and no flooding.

Hi Rebecca. I'm in Boulder...in the mountains just west to be precise. Glad to meet you! We're new to RU and are so happy we've found our way here. What do bees do in the winter?I know a weeny bit about you...maybe I should fill you in about me. Hmmm, mostly excited about and am reading a lot about RU. SOme of my passions in the past have been climbing and mtn biking. I used to be an actor and maybe I'll find some time to get back into that, but not for a while. Maybe when the sweeties are a little older. For now, I've been reading when time allows. I'm excited about subjects like, the present moment, growing my own food (of which I have no experience yet), other environmental issues, and teaching myself guitar and piano. :o) I think you know something about worms. I'd be eager to learn from you! Thanks for writing.
Blessings, Cary

Rebecca - I just read your comment (still trying to relearn Ning). I am really close to Marksville... maybe 45 minutes away?

I just checked out your page. Please tell me more about being a bee guardian. It sounds interesting!
