a little about me
Me...I grew up just outside of New Orleans. I'm a top bar hive/sustainable bee guardian. I also square foot-ish garden and compost with & without worms and continue to learn and do more urban homesteading. I'd like to learn to hoop dance when I find time to practice.

Quinn...Her current interests are Care Bears, penguins (a la Pingu), kitty cats, (all of the stuffed variety), and drawing lots of circles.

Matthew...refurbishes BMX bikes.

Hey Rebecca! I wanted to make sure that if you're coming to our unschooling park day tomorrow, you knew it was going to be up at the beach in Fontainebleau State Park near Mandeville!! We'll be hooking up with the ranger about 1pm to see some eagle & owls nests & babies. Hope you can make it! ~d

Thanks for the bee guardian info - I'm in total research mode now!

I'm sorry to hear about your aunt and uncle in Effie - I'm glad that the people and animals are fine. There was a lot of damage in central Louisiana. I think the media figured that since New Orleans was relatively unscathed (compared to Katrina), everything must be okay. But we (not "we" personally, but "we" collectively) got hit fairly hard. Luckily, our house and our family's houses are okay - no tornado or wind damage and no flooding.

Rebecca - I just read your comment (still trying to relearn Ning). I am really close to Marksville... maybe 45 minutes away?

I just checked out your page. Please tell me more about being a bee guardian. It sounds interesting!

I saw your comment and commented back that although the mystery is well.. still mysterious.. I love the name Firewitch and I wish that were it's name. I've seen Firewitch around here and there in people's yard, and now I know what to call it. I've heard people talk about their dianthus (which sounds like diana) plants, but don't think some would like me to call their flower Firewitch... more's the pity. Bible belt here you know.

It IS lush here!:) Eastern TN is one of the most biodiverse areas in the country. I love it.

If you all decide to come Monday and want to hang out or meet at a park over this way, let us know.

O!O!O! Who knew you could do real dancing w/hoops?? We watched several but the ones we loved most were by SaFire. So lovely...so fluid! Now we wanna go buy some hoops and try to dance with them!

Were you able to capture your swarm or did they get away? The beekeepers here were telling us about a type of mite that was destroying the hives here in LA. Apparently over 50% have been lost in recent years! And they've found that the Russian queens are resistant so they're introducing them to the hives to help protect them or something.
I would so love to read a beekeeping blog so if you start one, pls let me know!! :)
And the next time you're in this area, pls let me know! We'd love to meet you IRL!

Oh, FUN - I see where you were from the New Orleans area. Do you still have family here? Do you still visit the area?

I'd love to here more about your experiences w/ bees. We visited an amazing local beekeeper last week and afterwards added that to my list of things I want to DO.

Now off to google 'hoop dancing' :)
